Hello, this is my first post here, but I've been reading for a few weeks. I am researching to put together a surround system for my home(non HTiB), but am trying to help out my parents with theirs. They recently bought a new Samsung 46' 1080p LCD to replace their worn out tv. After helping them set it up, and disliking the sound from the tv speakers, I mentioned that they should get a surround sound to go with it. I told them I'd research it for them and get back with them. Well, my dad, having little patience went the next day and bought a Samsung HT-Z410.

We hooked it up to the tv via HDMI. The problem is that there is no sound at all coming from the rear speakers. The front, center, and sub sound fine (for what they need). I even took my PS3 down there today and hooked it to the tv via HDMI and used an optical cable from the tv back to the HTiB, but still no sound (played Spiderman 3 blu-ray).

During calibration the all speakers were recognized and made sounds.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

Good catch. I could not figure out how to change modes on the thing, so I called Samsung. They said you have to have the player in stop mode and eject the dvd in order to switch modes
. Well, I tried it and it worked. We now have sound coming from the rear speakers (not great sound, but sound nevertheless). I can't believe that you actually have to eject the dvd to switch modes. This coupled with the faint crackling from all speakers and the annoying Anynet crap would drive me crazy. I hope he takes it back, but maybe I'm just asking too much from a $250 system. I've looked around for a replacement for him, but I cannot find anything in that price range that I would buy.

I think what the [outsourced] Samsung representative told you was a bit of a stretch. This HTIB will not let you use Pro Logic II if you are in Auto Sound Calibration mode. I'm assuming you did ASC on the system. If so, switching PLII modes will not work.

I had a similar problem with this system. The [outsourced] Samsung CR told me the exact same thing. I suppose the cue cards they probably read doesn't indicate the ASC problem. After taking off ASC, I am able to switch modes whenever I want.

For the price, I think the system isn't too bad if you're just looking to replace TV speakers and have that all-in-one type system. The only problem is, you sort of have to figure out how to use the system by yourself.
