Cable box with component (red/green/blue) is fine, will work well. Broadcast max is 1080i and component works for that resolution. Tho your tv is 720p, so component is more than enuf.
DVD player with HDMI so it can upconvert the signal and send it to your tv, best option.
You could get a splitter, but component will work as well and provide an equal pic to HDMI so there really isn't a reason to do it. And a splitter can effect a signal as it passes thru, I'd go with the above.
