Samsung LNT5281F Smearing, ghosting

3489 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  ehartmann
Hello,

Less than a month ago I bought the LNT5281F and it was amazing, but recently I have seen some smearing and alot of blur happening. For ex. in the new Harry Potter movie on blu ray, in fast motion scenes the faces get really blurred or have like a trail behind them, this is in every movie and game. This didnt happen when i first got the set though.

Does anyone else have this problem? I will try and post videos later today.

So its not a sony models problem only! The same problem has been reported for XBR4/5 Sony
Here are two videos showing the problem, now after the videos i tinkered with the settings using some calibrations from these forums people offered and it toned the problem down but i can still tell its there,

does anyone else have this problem or should I contact my store and get the tv replaced?

Wow, I had got some feedback from a few 71 series owners that their LCD was just like my Sony XBR4 just not as bad and now I can add you to the list. It makes though since Samsung and Sony make joint panels for these sets. Look in the thread in my sig for my COD4 videos. It makes yours actually look pretty good.

Any tips on what i should do? This isnt so annoying during games, but REALLY annoying during movies.

anyone?

The only thing that seems to work on the XBR4 is to turn the brightness up but it washes the picture out. Try it on your 71 series and let me know if that helps. According to Sony this is within spec on their TVs and I wonder if Samsung feels the same. Have you sent their support staff the videos?
Try turning on LED Motion plus.
In setup mode, goto picture settings and switch from dynamic mode to movie. All of your advanced settings will now be available to set, including your 120hz motion settings

Does a 5281 have a 120htz motion setting?

Try a different HDMI cable, try a highend HDMI cable. Check this:

A friend of mine was having ghosting on his 4665F unit and got a better HDMI cable, the ghosting problem disappeared like magic. I know many guys here don't think that a better cable make the signal better for the LCD TV to work better, but just try it, perhaps it helps.
My Toshiba 530u does that aswell but only on Very specific things and I have only noticed on 3 things so far, The top level spectators in NBA, the Spectators In GT Hd demo, and the Trees in Ridge Racer 7 Demo. I have not seen it any other times. The funny thing is My friend has a 37" Sharp 62u and I saw it aswell when he played the GT Hd Demo. so it doesn't seen to be specific to any brand then. It must be somthign related to the LCD tech because the brightness setting does seen to have an effect on it
It's obviously a defect. Get the TV repaired/replaced. I played with an 81 in best buy last weekend. It does not do this on it's own.
the 81 series is a flop.

a pro reviewer said the performance is bad at viewing angles.
RobbyTV,

Can you tell me what review you read that said that the 81 series was a flop? Or, is that just your opinion.

I have read that the viewing angle becomes a problem at angles greater than 20 degrees from center. Off axis viewing is a common problem for LCD's. However, I don't see how that would relate to the ghosting image. I can't stand watching any TV from the corner of a room....

Everything I've read about the 81 series has been overwhelmingly positive with regards to contrast, color gamut(92% NTSC), brightness, HD performance, image refresh rate (LED Motion Plus) etc.

I dont own one, but as an LCD integrator engineer and designer, the switch to LED backlighting is a leap forward for flat panel HDTV's that I have anxiously anticipated. The bottom line on this series is that LCD's are finally coming of age in terms of performance in comparison to top of the line Plasmas, etc.

Other manafacturers are adopting and/or staging the LED backlighting technology switch now.

In what way has this series flopped?
