Should I be using the 720p or 1080i setting for my cable box component

video output to my Samsung (HLN5065W, component 2)?.

720p.


Your DLP is a 720p device, and 720p sources will not have to be converted. 1080i sources will be converted by the box.


If you set the box out to 1080i, you'll be doing two conversions for 720p (once by the box to 1080i and once again by the tv from 1080 to 720) and one for 1080i. (the box passes 1080i to the TV which converts it).


That's the general wisdom. Experiment a bit - you may find that you watch more 1080i material and that the box's converter is inferior to the TV's.

I have the 5100 set to 1080i for watching CBS-NBC-PBS-INHI DEF 1 and 2-HBO-Show. I reset the cable box when watching ESPN2- ABC. It is my understanding these channels send in 720p. I have a macro programed in my remote to execute this no fuss.
