Gaming monitors are hot category that continues to evolve at lightning speed. The Samsung 32G7 is a spectacular premium gaming monitor that offers 2560 x 1440 resolution, QLED display tech with HDR compatibility, a 240 Hz maximum refresh rate plus support for both Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync 2.

Curved monitors, high refresh rates and virtually nonexistent latency are key ingredients for a display that provides both and immersive experience and helps you win games. The 32G7 offer a 1 ms response time so you’ll never get caught flat-footed in a competition.

This is an ideal monitor size for immersive desktop gaming. It's not 4K, but the upshot is the native QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 is great for getting extremely fast frame rates out of high-end video cards while still enjoying a highly detailed presentation.

This monitor uses QLED VA LCD technology which provides a high native contrast ratio. The curved screen is not only immersive, it allows the screen to provide peak picture quality from edge to edge. When viewed from an optimal position, the image fills your field of view like a movie screen (it's the same field of view as my home theater) so you'll definitely feel like you are "in the game" when you play.

Unpacking and assemble of the Odyssey 32G7 monitor was fast and intuitive. Kudos to Samsung, there are zero loose screws involved in assembly and the parts go together in a couple minutes. Clever cable management is built into the stand, for a clean look. It's an attractive monitor that offers good adjustability, including a variety of picture modes tailored to different game types. Because the color is highly accurate right out of the box, it's mostly a matter of picking the display mode that you like best.

A few simple parts that fit together easily and no loose screws make the 32G7 assembly a cinch

The Samsung Odyssey 32G7 is extremely color accurate right out of the box, and the 2500:1 static contrast results in an image with tons of "pop" with shadows and highlights that express fine details. HDR looks phenomenal due to the high contrast and also the rich colors... even though my PlayStation 4 can't take advantage of this monitors high refresh rate what it can do is serve up spectacularly colorful graphics in games like The Amazing Spider Man.

It takes a powerful gaming PC to get the most out of this monitor, but if you have one the experience is sublime. My NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti proved a good match. In GTA V Online I was able to achieve 60 Hz with "Ultra" graphics settings and get 120 Hz out of it and 144 Hz if I dialed it back to prioritize speed over fidelity. Based on benchmarks, an NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti is an near-ideal match for this monitor.

Amazing Movies

Cinephiles willing to watch a movie on their own can use this monitor to create a "personal home theater" with superb fidelity. For sound, you can use headphones or speakers and on the visual side, just sit close enough that the screen looks as big as a movie screen (the optimum distance is 1 meter, which matches the 1000R curve perfectly) and prepare to be blown away.

The 2500:1 static contrast ratio of the 32G7 allows it to render deep blacks, bright whites and vibrant everything in between

Work & Web Browsing

Technically this monitor is overkill for something as simple as web browsing. But the combination of great picture quality and low latency make it a pleasure to use. Photos look saturated yet natural, text is super-sharp and 1ms latency even makes mouse movement feel a little smoother and more natural.

The reason to get the Odyssey 32G7 over a non-gaming monitor is exactly the fact that it excels at games and multimedia, but just like driving a luxury car to the grocery store is more pleasant than taking a minivan, this monitor makes working on a PC a more pleasant experience.

With its ability to reproduce 125% of the sRGB spectrum, any SDR (standard dynamic range) material is going to look stupendous on this display.

Performance & Measurements

I performed some basic measurements on this review unit to see how they compare to the published specifications. The results matched specs very closely, with a peak full-screen brightness exceeding 400 nits and 92% DCI coverage with the monitor in its "Cinema" mode.

You can also calibrate this monitor for production work, and I found that post-calibration the accuracy approaches perfection, with a DeltaE error of only 0.1-0.2 and literally perfect Gamma. That means you can edit reliably video or photos on this display, not just play games.

Ultra-impressive post calibration accuracy is a notable feature of the Odyssey 32G7 gaming monitor

I used to see how this monitor handles motion rendering. I was able to sync up to 144 Hz with my video card at QHD resolution and the result is crystal-clear motion. I'd love to see 240 Hz, but will have to wait for my next video card upgrade for that. Regardless, the motion performance of this monitor is fantastic, as you can see in this video clip:

I can't think of any reason why somebody would purchase a non-gaming monitor, aside from saving a few bucks but severely sacrificing performance. The benefits of fast response and brilliant accurate color extend beyond gaming, but are also crucial to a great gaming experience. The Odyssey 32G7 is practically perfect for a monitor its size, thus earning it a Top Choice award for 2020.
