Samsung One Connect Boxes

Samsung One Connect Boxes, good or bad?

One connect boxes seems appealing due to some benefits and Samsung made it look premium by hiking price on models with one Connect Box. However, I feel it is extra risk and cost for the user. Let us say the One Connect Box goes bad and I am out of warranty and I have to buy it. Some undesirable things could happen.
  1. The Box quality is most likely low as compared to hardware that is builtin, so it could be prone to wear and tear, physical damage, etc.
  2. The Box could be very expensive.
  3. The Box could be unavailable in the market.

To sum up, I don't want to lose my TV because of an external device. I would love it if Samsung provides one connect box in addition to builtin ports.

What do you guys think?

The risk is minimized because there is an option to replace the TV or the box. Most new TV's are not readily repairable.

I also felt the one connect box is more likely to receive firmware updates.

Replace is possible during the one year warranty period. What about when out of warranty?

OK, I'm trying to be helpful.

Example one: TV is defective in 2 years, Manufacturer says the main board is bad and it is not repairable (or you need to pay a tech to disassemble)

Example two: One Connect main board goes bad...essentially most internal stuff is on the outside. You replace it with one found on ebay or order from Samsung (>$500???). See the difference?

I got you now. I am not electrician but what is the probability of the TV motherboard being bad as compared to One Connect Box being bad?
I think the same and I wouldn't necessarily pay much extra for the box, but here are a few of my thoughts:

- One Connect provides some additional flexibility in mounting and connections

- Samsung may be more committed to updating these boards since they represent the highest tier products

- Easier to exchange if needed

For me most of these things didn't matter but it was one of the reasons I chose the Q90R over the Q80R.

I've been happy with the TV so far.

I love the clean look and the versatility of the OCB. I suspect that the original idea behind these boxes was about upgrade possibilities.

Also, a bad OCB is much easier to deal with than the whole tv if something inside it fails, especially that monster 82”. I’m not looking forward to the next time I have to move that beast.

My $8000 Samsung un78hu9000 tv just went black. Bad one connect box. Out of warranty. Samsung no longer makes the one connect for that model. I now have a 78” paperweight.
That is the problem with the one connect and Samsung.

I thought the whole point of the box was the chance that you could upgrade to a better box in the future that supports for instance HDMI 2.1 or some other new features. Samsung has not done this though.

This hasn't been the case for several years. Current One Connect boxes are strictly for ease of use.

That definitely sucks. How do you know it’s the OCB design/aspect that failed though? The component(s) could have potentially died regardless of whether they would have been inside a OCB or inside the TV itself. It sounds like you’re upset in general that your $8000 TV died; but to be frank, it was nearing 7 years old too.
Try reaching out to Samsung. I’ve had good luck with them taking care of out of warranty repairs.
my 2015 79: curved 4k has a fan overheating message and shuts down. Samsung no longer sells replacement or will even service it. They were useless at even telling me if a new available model would work.

I disassembled the one connect and cleaned all the dust out, but looks like the fan itself may be damaged as i still get the overheating message and TV shut down. So because of a .50 cent laptop fan, my $8000 TV which otherwise worked fine, is no longer usable. If anyone as repaired/replaced this fan, please let me know where u sourced it.
I wish more manufacturers would go this route. I loved having the ocb on both our last tvs for ease of switching inputs (both TVs were mounted and one was directly into fireplace stone). Not looking forward to dealing with adjusting inputs on a giant Sony or LG later this year.

What if you just leave the cover off? Does it overheat then?

I don't think that would help as it is the fan motor overheating, not the board itself. I took the box apart again and this time used compressed air to blow off the motor after i disassembled the fan. A piece of dust was lodged in one of the coils blew out. I put a drop of oil on the shaft and put it back together. No more overheating message so I lucked out. For future reference, Nicks TV in Tucson Arizona can actually repair the One Connect box, including my model.

Hi, I have a 2000 1765 inch queue LED Samsung QN65Q7FAMFXZA model. My one box has gone out. I cannot get any answer out of Samsung or TV repair folks locally whether I can buy a one connect box on eBay or some other seller and find out if it would be compatible with my unit. Are they cross compatible?
For anyone looking for a OCB cooling fan, there's many for sale, here's one:

Under $30 w/free shipping, get two with 20% off.

Others have reported that while removing old fan to install new one, finding hidden 'dustbunnies' not found in their inital cleaning. So check thoroughly before spending $30.

Also notice under "Similar ..." below that listing, that you can buy the fan for 8550 (Samsung w/o OCB). Unlike the OCB itself (which is quite TV Model specific {HU, JS, KS. ECT} ) the cooling fans are quite universal across OCB's.
