Samsung Patch delivered as promised

4142 Views 47 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  william06
Today I received the Samsung patch as promised when I called Samsung 2 weeks ago. It came without instructions so I just loaded it into machine and it took over. It took about 10 minutes. I than played Hitch. Looked okay a bit soft. Machine still had hour glass etc same as before. Havent had time to mess around more yet. I still feel My Toshiba HD-DVD has better pq but will reserve final judgement after having more tim to run other movies. I have not delved into the menus etc to see if I can change the sharpness as some have reported. Has anyone else received this firmware update and how did it work for you. I have had some issues with Samsung but I have to admit at this point they delivered the patch as promised.

Post a pic of the disc or a directory contents or something!!
Fantastic guys. I am glad Samsung is on the ball with this.

As an HD-A1 owner, I know the importance of manufacturers staying on top of firmware updates.

I hope it give you the improvement you are looking for.
I registered 2 months ago before I even bought a player for these updates. I better get one in the mail. Why couldn't they make this downloadable to a memory card?
william06, can you make a disc image of the CD then upload it? You can use RapidShare.de for that and share the link with the rest of the Samsung owners.

I just checked Samsung's website. It's not there as a download.

BTW, if anyone should ever try this with the disc image, please write down your firmware version before upgrading.

william06,

Can you post the firmware version numbers? You can show those numbers by holding "INFO" button on the remote for a while when the disc tray is open.
Today I called Samsung. My player has increasingly been getting (1) no disc (2) disc unplayable or (3) hourglass which never ends. Before I have always been able to get it to load after several attempts. Now I have had two copies of Corpse Bride from Netflix which I have never been able to load.

Level 1 told me that loading issues were being addressed by the firmware update and it would be out in the last two weeks of October. She put me on the list to receive the CD. Online I had previously entered my name at least 3 times.

When I saw this thread I called back to see if I could get the upgrade earlier. They referred me to level 2 who in turn talked to the product specialist. He told me the upgrade was out at the end of October. He told me that it was his understanding that it did not have the hourglass. He said that there was no way that I could get it earlier.
Looks like when they said, Blu-Ray was all about greed, they meant it...
Ok!!!! Just called Samsung... They are shipping me one. Should be here between a week and 10 days. When asked what it fixes... he said fixes the softness issue(it turns off NR chip... you will not be able to turn it on again) and makes it BD-J(I think thats what its called) compatability. Its been out for a week or two(I wish they would of told us that!!!!)

I asked if you can notice a difference... He said yes it sharpens the picture but you see more flaws.

He also said it will be available on their site shortly for download(no eta).

When you call try to get to level 2 tech support... The regular call takers are a bunch of monkeys....

Have your serial # ready also!!!!

Good luck!!!!

I only played one movie and have little time the next few days. It was hitch. I saw it in a store and it was very noisy. Mine was very soft too soft for my tastes. I have quite a few movies just have to find time to check when I do I will post. The hour glass is still there and I just got off the phone with patrick a level 2 at Samsung and he said the hour glass is not to be changed. I feel the load times were about the same. This was never an issue to me. Based on the one movie so far the picture is still not up to my Tosh HD-A! but in all fairness I have to check further. I have a feeling that the software mastering has more to do with it and mabey some of the other companies are trying to see hot to adress this before releasing the players. According to patrick The sharpness issue was originally set to on as a company decision and when turned off it stays now. the J=2 was the other issue adressed in this. The machines are capable for 50gb double layer from the begining. We will see. Again as I get a chance to watch I will report. You had me concerned for a minute that is why I called Samsung back I thought I had the wrong firmware.

Thanks

Thanks for the tip William... I wish you would of posted 2 weeks ago though.

MODS: How about a title change and a sticky.... So when these things start rolling in we can start posting are impressions!!!!

Thanks
I just called Samsung, and the customer service rep told me that the fix for the player won't be available until mid-late October. I told him that another guy on the AVS says he already got one, so he put me on hold for a few minutes just to make sure that it wasn't available. When he came back to the phone, he said it wasn't available. I asked if I could put my name down to receive the firmware when it is released, he said they had no list, and I would have to call back.

Does anyone at Samsung even know what the hell is going on? They sure don't give me much consumer confidence.

Just to reiterate, I spoke to a level 2 tech named Patrick who said I could quote him on the form that the firmware update I had was the right one. Call back and see if you can talk to him. This is a problem I have had all along since I bought this machine a lot of different informatio from different people. It is Ironic thought that the first time I spoke to a level 2 tech it was this guy way back in june. He appears to be one of the more knowledgeable ones. I hope I am not being led on a wild goose chase. That has been the big difference with Toshiba. All the info and updates I received from them were consistant and prompt. All were singing from the same song sheet.
