Samsung - PN59D8000

I have a 2011 PN59D8000 plasma that recently went out on me. I am building a house that will require me to buy several tvs at some point and i'm wondering if it is worth repairing. I was watching it when it made a short circuit type sound followed by a couple of clicking noises and the picture went out. Sound continued to work but no picture at all. I smelled a tiny bit of smoke but nothing visual. I took the back off and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Any ideas as to what went wrong and is it worth fixing?

I'm sure if you are technically inclined, you could repair it. But, as TV technology has come so far in the past 10 years, I doubt it would be worth the trouble and expense. It is 1080p (1k) compatible, with HDMI 1.4, but with 4k now being standard and 8k knocking on the door, HDMI 2.1 becoming standard, you really need to decide if you'd be better off just purchasing a new, more up-to-date TV? I'm sure others will be able to give you some advice as well. Good luck.
I replaced it with a Sony x90j but I was thinking that the old Samsung may work as a spare bedroom tv. If it is more than $200.00 to fix, it would probably be better to go get a new TCL for a couple hundred more.

My wife still likes 3D movies, so I am going to attempt a repair on my PN59D6500. Otherwise, I'd be grabbing another OLED for the house.

Good point. The 3D is going the way of the Dodo.
