1140 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  jcstraw
Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase this Plasma since the price seems good right now ($3500) and it has a DVI input, 3000:1 contrast ratio and HD resolution. What ya think? Good? Bad?

thanks. :)

Well it's got the same resolution as the Pannasonic 42 HD (1024x768), and the same contrast ratio (3000:1), and nobody else that I've heard of has those specs, so a good guess would be it's the current Panny panel.

However, the brightness is higher than the Panny number given (1000 cd/m2 vs 650 cd/m2), and Samsung does make their own panels. So maybe it's new and Samsung has matched the contrast ratio of Panasonic? That would be interesting news for sure. I would really love to know more about this display.
yup..I'm about to order this Plasma. Looks good on paper and it have a good price for a HD plasma.

Decisions, decisions...
Cap70 have you seen the Panasonic? I am wondering because if you do order the Samsung you could do some sort of comparison.

Just seems that this might be a good alternative because it can be had with the DVI input for about $700 less than the Panny 42 HD + DVI. Of course that only matters if the video quality is good! But I am not brave enough to order it sight unseen.

Please come back and lets us know if you do make the plunge.
I sure wish someone who's seen this diplay in person could give us a review... it's available now at Costco.com, and it looks very tempting.

Nope. It's a Samsung panel.

Exactly.
I've never heard of Samsung doing a rebadge, and if they did, it would be the same price as the Panny (as rebadges always are). Odd, they suddenly have the same contrast ratio though.
The good news with this unit is that the specs (eg. contrast ratio) are *much* better than previous generation Samsung plasmas... the bad news is specs can be decieving until someone actually reviews the unit for real world performance.

Somebody has got to have tried it by now...
Costco is carrying it. I'm heading over there this weekend to see what they have on display...also looking for DLP sets. If they have it in the warehouse I might just take it home for a test drive.
All,

Just to let everyone know, the DVI on the Samsung 42H3 is not HDCP compliant. That aside, it is a good panel. Feel free to PM or email me if you have any questions.

Thanks,

No HDCP? Bummer... that's a show-stopper in my book. Ce la vie -- looks like my next plasma will be the Panny at Costco.com
Cap70, I'm curious, did you end up getting the Samsung PPM42H3 42" plasma display?? I'm actually considering it as well. If you did get it, what do you think about it???? I haven't seen one yet, so I'm hesitant about the picture quality.....price is right though......

What does this display compare to?....in regards to quality and price???

Also, is this a newly released display from Samsung??

thanks!
