Samsung Q950TS 85" or Sony A80J 77"

Which is going to be the better screen?

I don't game, the room is reasonably shaded so I don't feel OLED is a concern for daytime viewing.

I was 99% ready to order the A80 and then was presented the opportunity to purchase the Q950TS for the same price which looks like a fantastic opportunity. I need to move quickly!

Does the Samsung have a crack running across the entire 85-inch diagonal?

I think your information is impossible.

Do you mean the 65 inch?

if you really do mean the 85-inch, and if it is new (not damaged in any way), and if you can get it now, then I suggest you buy it immediately. Then turn around and sell it, and go buy your 77A80J, and a PS5, a really solid UltraHD BluRay player, some cool PS5 games and 4K Blu-ray’s, and a top sound bar, and then use the extra money you still have left to buy other stuff, as well as a bunch of pizzas for a party when your new stuff arrives.

But that’s just what I would do. :)

... and then I would wake up.
I thought about it a bit more. Do you mean the Samsung 85QN90?

That would be closer to making sense. That would mean a nice deal on the 85QN90.

You have a serious problem then... but a great problem. Haha

You don’t game, so in my opinion I’d be going OLED for picture quality, but that’s just me. However, that Samsung is gonna be really nice, and 85 inches is big man. It’s noticeable over the 77.

LED guys are gonna say this a no-brainer for sure. OLED guys might still go with OLED because they like that tech, even though the screen is smaller.

Guys who want big awesome TV,s at good prices... ummm... well they go for the tv that’s big, awesome and a good price. In that case, the Samsung.

if you don’t like it, you can probably off-load it and still come away with the Sony for sure. Can‘t go the opposite way though.

It seems most people love their QN90, and you’re getting the biggest beast in that family. I love OLED, but man, that’s a big TV and a deal on it nonetheless.

For what it’s worth,

I recently sat and compare the 77A80J and the 83A90J side-by-side.

I could feel the 83-inch was bigger. You would go up to 85.

I‘m currently contemplating a 65-inch OLED vs 75-inch LED. I want the OLED, but can’t stop worrying that I will regret the size disparity.

Your boat is almost exactly the same. The only difference is that my 75 would be a tad bit smaller than your OLED.

I’d love the 77-inch OLED. But as I said... 85 is big man. I checked out the Sony 85X90J recently and it looked big. The 85X85J... looked big. The 85Z9J looked...big.

if that’s what you want to feel, then get the Samsung before it’s gone. You can’t go wrong with both TV’s. But only one of them is 85-inches.

To really confuse you, they say the A80J isn’t much different than the A90J (except for a very tiny bit of brightness I think), and that’s the way I felt. I thought getting the A80J was quite similar to an A90J.

No home video enthusiast or gamer has ever said "my tv is too big"
people do concessions but hide it in their tiny heads.

"77 inch OLED is too big anyway, 65 inch is much better!!" Yet if they were the same price, they would not even for a second actually believe 65 inch is much better.

There is no right or wrong answer, especially since you don't state how far you are sitting from the display. There is an advantage to the larger screen, but IMO the OLED provides better PQ (and you specifically asked which is the "better screen"). Of course, the 83" A90J would be the best of both worlds, but at a higher price.

You can buy 2 of the 77A80J for less and even save $1000 then 1 83A90J. Not the best of both worlds for everyone.
edited - sorry, didn’t know you were actually being serious about this
I agree. This is so stupid.

this guy says this is real, and if’s like the dumbest thread I might have ever seen.

For the same price, he is not sure if he should TV A, or TV B worth AT LEAST double the price. How is this even a discussion? Dude, do you know nothing about business?
So you want me to reply now when you said no more messages? You have been helpful but have since become very emotional because why? Because I didn't jump immediately for the RRP most expensive screen. I understand some folk get kicks from making crap up online but that's not me.

I do business for a living, I'm not looking at this as a business transaction to potentially flip the Samsung and make cash. I want to buy the TV that delivers the best on what it should and stick with it. I have owned many things that are better than the more expensive model or alternative. This was a genuine question to get input from true enthusiasts. I agree I don't have much knowledge in this area but I'm reading and researching when I get free time and ultimately learning.(y)
Do you watch in a pitch black room? then choose OLED.

no this will not get used in a dedicated environment with no lighting/pitch black.

Then OLED is wasted, unless you watch tv from the side.

Truth is, not a single movie in existence uses "true black" in the actual video. With OLED you get blacker borders around the screen and that's it. I watched Snowpiercer (2013) yesterday and at no point in the movie was there any black darker than the black borders surrounding the video. OLED contrast is much better though, however, it takes a dark room to appreciate it

Understood. I'm talking to the vendor tomorrow. Will post my decision after. thanks
At first I thought you were just making a joke here... ok, you aren’t. Sorry for being unsure. It just seemed odd. Now I understand you are really wondering about this situation. In that case, do you really understand what these 2 TV’s are?

You misunderstood me. I didn’t try to say the Samsung is better because it is more expensive. I understand you want the best TV for you personally, and that’s how you should do it. However, my point was not about which TV is better.

I meant these 2 TV’s are not normally compared because their prices are so different. I think most would categorize the deal on the Samsung as “too good to be true”. Of course, that is based on price, not quality.

FYI, I’m in China today, if I want to buy that Samsung here, it costs $15,000 USD (Including tax).
I believe the msrp in the US was around $12,999 USD.

I just meant that if you go with the Sony and think you should have gotten the Samsung, i don’t think you will see that deal ever again. (But who knows. Maybe the deal is good because that TV isn’t wanted by people. I don’t know).

Anyways, hope you like whichever TV you get. They both seem awesome.
