Samsung sp-p4231 clay face/posterization issues

718 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Bud-man
I 've had my Samnsung 42" SP-P4231 for no more than 3 days and I am really dissapointed. I am hoping there is a solution to my problem.

With a standard 480 signal via s-video from my sattelite dish, the image quality is anywhere from acceptable to good. When I switch to DVD Component, I get really bad "clay face" and posterized images when the scene is dark. It is maddening to watch a movie like Moulin Rouge on this display. It might as well be a cartoon!

I've tried a different DVD player and no luck. I even tried my laptop which uses a DVI connection to drive the plasma and DVD movies still look like crap. I went through every picture option on the Samsung and it barely made a difference.

Do I have a bad unit? Is this normal for this model?

Any suggestions?

1. Buy Digital Video Essentials or Avia DVD to calibrate your TV.

If you are still not happy with the picture, consider another brand of plasma. Panasonic has a new 42" model coming out in March: TH-42PD50U

Unfortunately some brands are known for the "clay" face issues.

brokenhorse,

Don't waste your time and money on DVE. Bottom line is this panel is a piece of [email protected]#t.

Two of my friends bought these last week at Sam's. I installed one over the weekend. Using HD Cable with DVI, and Component cables. Only Sports looked good. Everything else had clay faces, digital artifacts, poor shadow detail, etc., etc., etc.

It did not matter what output we used, this is a very poor panel.

I personally would take the panel back, buy the new panasonic when it comes out in a month or 2 and be done with it.

I was hoping that this wasn't the case but I am beginning to accept it.

You nailed it when you said poor shadow detail.

What pisses me off is that it looked good at the store and the few reviews I found about it on were good.

The challenge now is returning it for a full refund.

Thanks.

Sam's has a good return policy if you bought it there, i was loking at this for 1850 at sams, saw it at a local merchant lined up with panny's, hitachi's etc and it looked as good as the rest..maybe you just got a lemon?
