After 7 years, the 720p Samsung Plasma in my living room died. In the interest of getting a TV back up over the fireplace quickly, I did a quick search for TVs that would fit the space, could be picked up locally, and were relatively inexpensive. I ended up sticking with Samsung, grabbing the UN50MU6070 (looks like a slightly stripped-down version of the 50MU6300, maybe only sold at Best Buy). Just in the first impressions stage so far, but I am quite happy with the TV, save for viewing angle (but I'm not willing to spend OLED money for a "casual viewing" TV, and I got the impression the trade-offs of an IPS panel would bother me enough to outweigh any off-axis viewing advantages). There is, however, one fairly major problem I'm experiencing.
I have all the sources for the living room TV located on a rack in my basement. The sources are all run into an HDMI switcher, then the output of that runs into a set of HDMI extenders running over two Cat5e cables, and the output of the extenders into the TV. This was all working perfectly well with my old plasma. It is also working perfectly well with all but one of my sources and the new TV. But my ADB 2721W IPTV set-top box is having issues.
So far I've tried both HDMI inputs on the TV, as well as swapping two different set-top boxes, with no improvement. What happens is, I am able to see the on-screen guide just fine, but I cannot actually view any programming material (neither live nor recorded). I have gotten a couple of "blips" where I see content for a fraction of a second -- this occurs when switching from another source (e.g. Blu-Ray player) back to the STB. Then it goes dark again.
I did find a work-around -- if I route the output of the STB into my XBox One, then pass the output of the Xbox One through the rest of the chain, I regain the ability to watch live or recorded TV. So as best I can tell, this has got to be some sort of HDCP issue, right? It's just weird, because I feel like when I read about people having HDCP issues it's usually trying to push a 4K source to a non-4K (or at least non HDCP 2.2) display... but I thought HDCP 2.2 displays were supposed to be backwards compatible with legacy sources! Anyhow, has anyone here seen something similar, and been able to fix it for cheap? I don't really want to have to run through the XBox One to watch TV in the living room. I also don't want to throw much money at making this TV work, when I might be better off returning this TV and buying something else (assuming this is not a widespread issue with 4K TVs in general). -edit- I should add, this problem first manifested without me changing any settings on my sources (running 1080i output from sources). I did some experimenting later, and found that sources other than the STB (e.g. Blu-Ray player, XBox One) are able to pass 1080p over this chain without problems, so I don't think it's a bandwidth issue.
