Not sure, but this thread will be huge with tons more info to come. The one thing that is intriguing about Samsung is that they are going to now focus on LED. This will definitely shake up the LCD market. Pricing should come down tremendously...

Any mention of Samsung using "THX" in any of their models? Do they still have Analog Tuners in them? & I wish someone would build a model with

P-I-P & Twin QAM Tuners in it & it should be easy enough to do especially if they drop the Analog Tuners. Any info on Split-Screens in any models?

Yes, the B6000/B7000/B8000 series in 40/46/55 inch sizes are all LED panels.....thats nine different TVs at three different price points each....a very healthy lineup!!!

Between this and recent reports that the South Korean Won has a much more favorable exchange rate vs. the US Dollar than the current Yen/Dollar relationship means Samsung (and to a lesser extent, LG) will probably do MAJOR damage to their Japanese counterparts give their added flexibility in terms of exchange rates and engineering leadership in product development...

In 2009, I believe Samsung will be the ones to watch in consumer electronics

There was a review on CNET I read last week where they reviewed the Samsung 9 series LCDs which use LED backlight. They said it was the 'best' image they've seen on a LCD, but still not as good as the Pioneer Kuro Plasmas, with the cost being about the same.

Now Samsung is having more model series with LED backlight, so the price will be less. It will be interesting to see how those stack up to Plasmas.

Wasn't there an article on Engadget a while back saying that Pioneer was going to release more Kuro units in 09, including a few Kuro LCDs?

LEDs have some of the deepest black levels of any display today. However, the most challenging problem is keeping the back light completely off. I believe the new Samsung LEDs will be an improvement over the A950s. However, the Kuro blacks are the toughest to replicate. Given how blacks improve year after the year I wouldn't count out next years Pioneer Extreme Black Contrast Ratio, but we won't see anything until 4th Quarter of 2009.

Yes, pioneer will release new kuros in '09 (G10 sets), although they may be out a bit later than in previous years. We will see 5 lumen tech, and possibly extreme contrast (infinite contrast ratio). If we don't see extreme contrast, we can expect a lowered black level that is perhaps still unmeasureable (and from all angles and with all content). So that will be pretty big either way.

I assume they will use a unified panasonic/pioneer/hitachi NeoPDP-based glass produced in panasonic's new plasma plant and assembly of the other internal components will take place in pioneer's current factory.

The interesting thing is each company will have a choice of how to implement the increased efficiency. Pioneer will presumably use advances in their proprietary 'kuro' tech to lower black level, along with the increased efficiency to help certain other areas of the panel. I'm guessing Panasonic will be doing a similar thing as they use their tech from the vx100 series to further lower black level, along with the implementing the various enhancements 5 lumen tech can bring.

For small screen sizes, Sharp (part owner of pioneer) will market one of their LCDs rebadged with the pioneer name on it.

The pioneers? Maybe. Its actually already been done, it just is very expensive to manufacture right now. There is talk of waiting further to release the tech due to the high cost.

The samsungs LEDs? No. That is not something that a backlight-based tech can achieve. On the LED sets the blacks will likely be the same as last year but with a reduction in the host of problems that LED tech brought to the table. The main area that people should watch is viewing angles. They took a huge step back from even the regular lcd models with the 2008 led sets.

The samsung plasmas? Unless they have a BIG trick up their sleeve, no. Although I have heard they are planning something.

Hi,

I will not believe that Samsung will have any significant improvement in Black Levels with their plasmas - at very best they probably might be on par with this years Panasonic models with their new 2009 line-up seeing as they can now no longer use some of the tech they pinched from Pioneer. I remember about how LG caused massive anticipation threads that ran for months with their promised "Infinite/Absolute Black" Plasmas that were supposed to be launched earlier this year only to be mysteriously withdrawn at launch time. At the end of the day it was just marketing hype and its something the Koreans take too far! Samsung/LG Plasmas will never be able to match the blacks of basic (non Neo-Pdp) Panasonic models let alone those from Pioneer.

Samsungs current plasmas don't have support for 24fps, did I read this correctly in that the 2009 plasmas will have 96hz capability and bypass the 2:3 pulldown with 4:4 pulldown. Am I also correctly understanding that it will play high def .mkv files off the usb input or just the DLNA network input. This tv will also be DLNA compliant. If you search google you can download the owners manuals for the 2009 650 series. Will someone just verify if I am correct on these points for the 2009 series 6 samsung plasmas.

1. They will have the option of running at 96hz to eliminate 2:3 pulldown.

2. They will be DLNA compliant and be able to run high def .mkv files via network.

3. They will be able to run High Def .mkv files via USB port and USB memory stick.

4. Will Touch of color still be added to the series 6 plasmas?

Can anyone confirm if I'm right about these 3 points if so I am returning my TV, taking the 15% restocking fee and waiting for these 2009's
