Once the signal hits a mountain it stops, adding power or rotating the antenna wouldn't really change anything for areas past that. Once that happens unpredictable effects like knife edge diffraction dictate how well the signal can be recieved and not the power.
South Bay has LOS(line-of-sight) to Sutro tower:

Where in the South Bay are you and what kind of antenna are you using? There is a RF 7 LPTV station in Monterrey that could potentially affect things in portions of that area, especially when the boost conditions are good. Can you post the link to your rabbit ears report?

BTW, the directional pattern is likely to protect adjacent KSBW on RF 8. The TV study with KRON's construction permit says it causes 0.43 interference to KSBW, and the limit is 0.5.

If you're still using that FlatWave, that's the bigger issue. Contrary to what their marketing info says about supporting VHF-Hi, its 14"x14" dimensions (with internal elements that are smaller) are not optimal for VHF reception, so it performs worse the lower the RF number.

If you upgrade to that other model with an external VHF element you should have an easier time pulling in KRON, although a traditional full band Yagi style antenna would do a lot better and get you addtional channels like KRCB and KQRO-LD.

I live near Union Square area. However, I can't picked up any tv stations broadcasting from Mt. Allison or Monument Peak. Also, I can't picked up LPTV from San Bruno Mountain at all. I've only can picked up tv stations that are transmitting from Sutro Tower and full-power tv stations from San Bruno Mountain. Any suggestions to pick up other tv stations in the bay area?

How to receive KRON 4 in San Jose area despite KRON 4 efforts to the contrary (I am sure their advertisers are happy with KRON 4 signal being practically unavailable in this 1M+ market) :

1. CM-4228HD antenna EXTREMEtenna 80

2. This might be sufficient but my TiVo was showing SNR of 19dB or signal strength of 48% which shows up in yellow.(green starts at 20dB or 50%) Picture was stable but given the possible fluctuations in signal strength in bad weather I was afraid the signal can degrade.

3. As part of a bundle Channel Master sells an amplifier which may make things better. I used KT-700 pre-amp from Kitz giving me an extra 3dB (according to TiVo) and putting the signal strength in green at SNR 22dB or 55%

4. In case you have no hardware skills: Frank from Carrillo Antenna is highly recommended. Frank has been installing CM 4228 antennas for the last year and getting consistently great results with them. The performance is not a result of good luck as some are attempting to imply.

I am no longer using FlatWave since the amplifier was doubling the frequencies of all FM radio stations making weak signal VHF reception difficult.

That CM 4228 doesn't appear to have any dedicated VHF elements, many 3rd party sites just list it as a UHF antenna, and the detailed specs says it has about half the range for VHF-Hi compared to UHF.

For optimal VHF reception you need something with dedicated VHF dipoles (something that looks like Antennas Direct's VHF Kit) or a traditional yagi style antenna like Channel Master's Digital Advantage (CM-2xxx) series for VHF-Hi, or their Advantage (CM-3xxx) series if you want something full band that will get you the VHF-lo channels.

The performance on VHF-Hi is adequate, VHF-Lo is a different story. There is also visual appeal which might be important to some.

Let's post a picture of CM-3020 to compare: ;)

Until they move to the mountain top, do not worry about the RF 7 in Monterey, it is SOOOO weak we can't see a hint of it in Santa Cruz! Ch8 is more likely to cause interference.

Several stations have recently changed their programming. Virtual channels 3, 4, 18, 20, 28, 32, 38 and 50 have all changed - and Skylink in Chinese is only transmitting audio on 38.2. I updated my lists today but haven't had a chance to proof read them yet. Let me know if you find any errors.

You'll find the virtual, transmitter and repack listings all listed here:

Nobody can get KRON 4 in South Bay because of a possible interference with an adjacent channel in Salinas based on a model with the below disclaimer?

Irregular Terrain Model (ITM) (Longley-Rice) (20 MHz – 20 GHz)

Disclaimer: The ITM software was developed by NTIA. NTIA does not make any warranty of any kind, express, implied or statutory, including, without limitation, the implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement and data accuracy. I think KRON 4 should commission a new study.

When I rescan the channels. I notice my tv puts KMTP 32.1 instead of 32.4 or 38.2. Also, 38.2 has changed to SkylinkTV, but I've only gotten the audio feed instead of the video feed. Has anybody has the same problem as I did?
I only got audio feed from 38.2 also on both of my DVRs (Magnavox and LG). However I can get video from 38.2 on my Insignia TV that I bought a year ago. My guess is 38.2 changed its coding format that older sets no longer can decode its video (?). The reason I noticed that was because SkylinkTV switched from 4.2 to 38.2 starting June 1. There are a couple of Taiwanese news talks I'd like to follow.

That's a very standard disclaimer. Longley-Rice is the standard propagation model used for pretty much all TV analysis.

Tough choice - screwing advertisers (and viewers) in a 1M+ market or verifying a theoretical study using empirical data.
