Sanyo PLV-Z1 - Replacing fans?

381 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  eatmyshortsdude
I just took ownership of a 12 month old Sanyo PLV-Z1 LCD projector, it appears to have been directly imported from Japan (has Japanese characters on the top cover) and seems to be in excellent condition... aside from the fact the fan is extremely loud!

I can hear sort of a ticking sound coming from one of the fans, after reading through the service manual it seems there are actually 4-5 fans inside this thing... from the outside of it I can see at least one at the back.

My question is, has anyone ever tried replacing any of the fans on this projector? I would be most interested in hearing from people who have, and what replacement fans can be used. I haven't approached Sanyo about this either, I don't know if they'd be willing to sell me the replacement parts directly.

I expect that you need to adjust the projector to low power on the bulb. The difference in fan sound between high and low is significant.

The Z1 is not loud at all. If you think it is loud, you either have it on high power, you are running it in a very hot room, or there is a problem with the projector.
Done. My Sanyo PLV-Z1 is set to "theater black mode" which reduces lamp power and slows the fan, but I still find it to be quite noisy.

I suspect one or more of the fans needs replacing. I plan to open the case, pull the fan at the back, find out its spec/ratings and replace it with a new one (and while I'm at it clean and dust the rest of the internals too), hopefully someone here has attempted this and can give me some advice on how to go about it.
