SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 2600PRO 100206L - 256 Vs. 512

1021 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Bob7145
NewEgg has a sale on the SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 2600PRO 100206L 256MB for $57 after the rebate, but the 512MB version is only $76 (no rebate). Is the HTPC (and occasional gaming) capability difference significant enough to pay a little bit more for the 512MB version? Thanks for your opinions.

It depends on if the ram is the same. If it is it will only be useful for gaming if not then don't bother if slower.

Graphics ram in order of preference - GDDR4, GDDR3 then DDR.
Both listings indicate GDDR3, but there seems to be some debate, as at least one reviewer indicated that the 256 is only DDR3. It's not clear if that is also the case for the 512, but they seem to have the exact same configuration otherwise, so it's likely to be DDR3 also. As I would like to do a little gaming with it, I was assuming it would always be worth having more memory, especially if they're the same type anyway.

You can't do much gaming with a 2600 Pro. You would be much better off with a Radeon HD 3850 256 MB/512 MB. On this card the 512 MB of RAM will make a big difference. On the 2600 Pro 512 MB won't make much of a difference as the card is quite slow.

... and 3 to 4 times poorer for the purchase....

Unfortunately, the cost difference is more significant to me than their comparative gaming capabilities.

Neverthless, your input is appreciated.

You can kinda game on a 3850. Maybe a 4 year old game on the 2600pro.
