The ATi software will not work like this I believe. But there are 3rd party solutions that will control an external satellite STB.

Yes. I have a Dish 301 (sold as Bell ExpressVu 3100 in Canada) hooked to my 8500DV via S-Video in. No problems using various PVR software with it in the testing I have done. However, you cannot change the channels through software, but must use the DBS receiver's remote instead since you are bypassing the 8500's tuner.

If you have an audigy, you can if you have the live drive, which has an onboard dolby digital decoder for the inputes.

With the soundblaster live, the digital input will only accept PCM, so if you watch something in Dolby Digital, you wont get any sound.

I'm not sure about any other cards.

I would imagine most have the same problem as the sb live though.

I would reccomend just using analog if you dont have an audigy.
