Satellite vs cable reception?

722 Views 13 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  lolowar
I recently moved from a COX region to Adelphia. Adelphia is amazingly bad. First they overcharged me $40, the installers were terrible, and their digital box doesn't even have a digital out connection. The reception is also very bad.

In general, does satellite have better reception than cable? My phone company uses Dish and offers package deals. Is their a big difference in picture quality between Dish and Direct? Out of the two which is better?

The debate is highly region depenedent. A search on your locale in the local reception forum may yield some answers.

I have TWC with two HD boxes both with working DVI and one with a working 1394 port. HD/SD looks great and there is a reasonable choice of HD channels -- I have no thought of going to satellite.

I think I can safely say that satellite reception, Dish or DirecV, will be better than what you have with cable. Cable in other parts of the country may be better. Which satellite provider is better is subjective. It depends on what is offered. Generally, there shouldn't be a lot of difference between the two. If you are thinking about getting a DVR, then DirecTV's can't be beat. IMHO! HD is a different matter. :)
If you're into HD, Voom is your only choice. D* has only 7 HD channels.
what about the picture quality of HD on directv. I hear people complaining all the time that they are over compressing the signal

I thought Voom was just bought out.

E* only bought the assets...not the content. Voom is still kickin via the Dolans.

VOOM has no locals, SD or HD. VOOM original programming might not suit everyone's taste (Most movies are pre-1975), and it's expensive. 100.00 for the VaVAVOOM pack. I switched over to E* in 1999. I can't say I have regretted it for one moment. Charter cable is in my area, and the PQ is horrible. Snow, snow, and more snow. The programming guides are non-intuitive compared to what I've had with E*. Go with E* or D*, and more than likely you WILL notice a difference in SD PQ vs any cable provider.
D* has 7 HD channels, Comcast has a couple more; How many HD channels

does E* have?
Albany (Upstate NY) Time Warner Cable delivers a very good sd/hd picture, currently offers 16 HD channels, plus broadband Internet access.
I thought Voom gave you the antenna to get the locals?
Voom does give you an antenna for OTA locals.

Yes they do, but not even the big man himself can guarantee that you will be able to receive them all......It's a hit or miss situation, depending on many variables that I will not even get into.....
Cox over here doesn't even have HD yet. Channels 99 and below are all analog. A very grain picture when you compare it to SD OTA for the same channel. My last person that rented the house I live in left his dish up. I connected my friends D* box during lunch one day to compare and D* won hands down. I have decided to go with satellite. Maybe when cox offers HD I'll switch back, but not if they still have all those analog channels.
