Hey, quick question. Is there an advantage to go with a scaler, like the Crystal Image or the Quadscan, when I already own a progressive scan DVD player(Sony 9000ES)?? Is the scaling better? My screen is 16 x 9 80" wide. I figure it will scale DSS better than my internal scaler but...Any help is, as alway, greatly appreciated.

Generally speaking, external scalers/doublers do a better job than the doubler in progressive DVD players. Not sure about the Sony, might want to check out this

I agree with the above post (because of the extra AD DA convertion and external de-interlacer should be inferior)

HOWEVER

IF you are using a projector that can take an input, then you must consider that the internal scaler of the projector must take your 480p and make it

XGA or SVGA.

So, if your projector has a poor internal scaler, than it may still mess up your feed from your good 480p DVD player.


In this case an external scaler would be better because it could feed a scaler XGA direct to your projector.


I am dying to test this with my Sanyo (Quadscan input vs 480p from iScan pro), just havent had the time.
