do external scalers suffer from video noise even if minimal the same way that many htpc's do? i am specifically referring to a source with a S-video output connected to the input on the scaler. its seems that many htpcers have tried several capture cards which leads me to believe that its difficult for an HTPC to input a clean signal thru the svideo.

could i get some opinions on the noise or lack of video noise introduced from any of the external scalers?

It is a problem for some scalers.

The Rock, for example (I had one, so I can comment on that) had video noise in the first releases and it took them a while to get rid of it.

They use special wiring and also a custom input card (not the standard video capture cards that aren't that high quality) and, as far as I know, this is a non-issue now.

I'm not aware of specific video noise for units like the Vigatec or Faroudja units.
