I've been in HD-DVD for close to two years, and fully intend to keep my small collection of titles along with my A-20 and A3 for as long as possible. That said, I had a bit of extra time over the holiday and finally got around to making some firmware updates. They've always gone very smoothly for me, via ethernet, Toshiba supplied disks and my own burns of firmware ISO's. Here in the sunny Southwest, power outages are rare, especially during the winter months when A/C demand is zero. So, armed with the latest 4.0 disk, I fired up the A20 and let 'er rip. In the strangest coincidence (?!) in a long time, during the short (~20 minute) update, I had three brief power drop-outs in my house. These were enough to require resetting of clocks and a restart of my PJ, but none exceeded a split second. Needless to say, I dreaded what was happening to my A-20 which persisted in stepping throught the steps 1 of 5, 2 of 5, etc. I fully concluded during those anxious minutes that HD-DVD was simply meant to die (at least in my house), and was wondering how long before my other player would give up the ghost. I was surprised when my player seemed to complete all steps and did the normal eject and power down sequence. Who could guess what would be seen when I attempted a power-up?

Well, happy to report, the player came back to life as always, displaying firmware 4.0 in the maintenance menu. I guess HD-DVD will live on in my house for some time. If this didn't kill the A-20, I don't know what will.

(just some happy, HD-DVD rambling for the holidays....)

I haven't updated my A30 (currently with firmware V1.3 resident) but have made a CD from the V4.0 ISO. Didn't realize it took 20+ minutes so I think I'll use an UPS for this! If I decide to do it. As it works fine already I may leave well enough alone.

Glad your player survived this.

Thanks Quentin2. Part of me was agreeing "leave well enough alone," but it was overruled by the part saying "you've had zero problems with firmware updates, why not just do it?" It may not have been even 20 minutes. It was just one of those strange experiences in life that leave you scratching your head wondering why, in an area where we haven't had a power glitch of any kind in months/years, I get three drop-outs during the brief period of time my firmware update is running. In retrospect, we had a rare freeze here in Southern Arizona and it may be that some ice formed somewhere in the power grid and was the root cause for this. Still, very strange......

When I first got my player I always plugged it into a UPS to update the firmware. I didn't bother for 3.0 and 4.0 though.

Tempting fate...

When I had my A35, I never bothered with FW updates. I sold it on with 3 unopened Tosh discs.

For my PS3 I am more wary. I have read a number of incidents where carrying out updates have either bricked the player, or brought other issues to the surface.

I usually wait now and let others try first.
