I just got a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 and wanted to know if there are cards available to use this DVR with my cable service. I know if I had a Tivo I could use it with my cable provider.

The SA Explorer 8000 predates the CableCARD mandates. So no, you can't use it with a provider other than the one that issued it. Even if it were a CableCARD-equipped unit (and again, it's not), it wouldn't be a CableCARD-certified unit, since it's a provider-only device. No one else will touch it.

Has anyone here used the Scientific Atlanta Explorer Digital Set-Top Box / PVR? Time Warner is offering one locally for an extra $5/month, so I'm going to trade in my current box for one of these. They're supposed to have two tuners, two MPEG encoders, and an 80 GB hard drive. Recording time is 50 hours. Plus, since is uses the same programming guide as my digital cable, there's no need for a phone line.
