Hi,

Im buying an Optoma HD65 projector to replace my H30 and im looking to shoot a 106" image from 13ft. The projector will be directly behind my head and at eye level. The only thing stopping me, is that with a 106" 16:9 projector screen, there will only be an inch or two or clearance to the side walls and ceiling which are all painted light beige. This has me concerned that light reflected off the surrounding walls might have a very negative impact on the blacks and overall image making it look more washed out. So before I decide on a screen, I wanted to ask which material would be best - matte white or a grey screen?

Many thanks in advance!

I think your concerns regarding the wall colors is well founded.

I am more concerned that you think you can mount the projector at eye level. Do you realize the bottom of the image will then be 10" above eye level. The HD65 has a fixed offset and no lens shift. It is also a fairly loud projector. You should be ceiling mounting this projector or possibly table mounting it.
Hi Tiddler,

With the small offset of the HD65 (between 19-22% ive seen mentioned around here) it is very similar to what my current H30 offset is and to overcome this I tilt the pj forward to bring the image down roughly 1ft to fit nicely onto the wall. I only need to tilt it a few degrees to get the image in place and the geometry of the projected output is not distorted at all so no need for keystone.

As for the noise of the HD65, well yeah, it will be right behind my head and to the side, within 2ft, but im not worried as my current H30 is still whisper quiet at that distance and I will be running the HD65 in low lamp / economode so I dont expect it to be much of an issue...

What do you reckon with regards to the most suitable screen? Thanks for yout input

The Da-Lite High Power retro-reflective material might be the best choice in your situation. With the projector close to your line of sight this would work well. The HP material is supposed to be good at rejecting ambient light from the sides so it may not be effected as much by the close proximity of the light colored walls and ceiling.
I agree with Tiddler. I use the HP in a room with white walls and ceiling. My walls and ceiling are several feet away from the edges of the screen though. You may find that you will need to darken the walls for at least a few feet out from the screen to reduce reflected light. Also the wall behind your viewing position may need to be darkened, because the HP is most sensitive to light sources behind the viewers. You can do this with either paint, or a draped fabric if you can't use paint.
The good news about bright scenes is the brightness washes away most of the effect of reflected light back on the screen.

The bad news is that the bright white/beige walls and ceiling are going to light up like a Christmas tree with off-axis reflected light from the screen itself. This, I think, is a bigger problem than the reflected room light back on the screen itself. I find it distracting when the bright scenes hit the screen, and the entire room is lit up so brightly, showing every crack and crevice in the ceiling and walls surrounding the screen.

We're in the process of picking paint colors and fabric wall treatments to minimize this issue in our HT. Some people aren't sensitive to it, but you might be!
