I am purchasing a projector in the near future but ran into some screen problems. my Basement height is about 7ft and the width of the wall i would like to place the screen on is only about 72in. I would like to fit a 16:9 screen on there but running into some problems, can anyone help me?

A bit more info would be good. What problems in particular? I'm assuming that you would be happy with a 72" x 40". In my view 72" is just too small. Is there another wall or area you could use?

Sounds like you've got one thin room to deal with--at worst, 6' wide; at best, 7.7' wide. I hate to say it, but screen issues aside, you're likely going to have some major acoustic issues to deal with (e.g., front array imaging, room mode problems, etc.). As Joe noted, the more info you give us (exact LxWxH room dimensions, seating layout, projector type, etc.), the more help/suggestions you'll get.

Okay, but we still need more info--like the exact dimensions of the room, because you might even run into a throw distance issue (given the short wall dimensions, I can't help but think the length is short as well...but maybe not).

Here are some points to ponder...

Say, for example, that you want to use the 72" wall for the screen. Most screens use either a 1.5" or 3" wide frame border, so even if you did want the screen to take up the entire wall, you couldn't do a 72" wide screen...you'd be looking at a 69" or 66" wide screen. Even then, where are you going to put your front left/right speakers? Yes, you can put them under/over the screen, but in your case, you're wanting to use a 4:3 projector on a 16:9 screen, meaning that you're going to have lots of light spill to deal with above and below the screen...light that could turn your speakers into reflecting pools. That issue aside, with a 66" wide screen (37"x66"), the minimum throw distance for the VT45 is right at 10'...plus the 9" depth clearance means that you'll need the room to be a minimum of 11" (to be safe) to even be able to throw a 66" wide image.
