Hi Guys,

So I finally have a space to have a dedicated HT, its not ideal but i'll take what I can get and want to make the best of it. I will be painting the walls and ceiling black for this purpose and the room will be light controlled so all viewing will be in the dark with no additional ambient light. The projector I am upgrading from a 720p optima is an Epson 5040ub, and my screen preference is 2.35:1. My max vertical screen size can be 56 with a boarder so I'm guessing around 130ish diagonal with the projector sitting about 13 feet back with a viewing distance of 9 feet. I have been looking into screens originally settling on a 135 inch Silver Ticket, but then I started reading and there are so many options each with pros/cons(paint, spandex, and many makes of screens) that now I'm a bit confused on what would be the best from a cost/benefit perspective. Based on my understanding I should be about at 1400 lumens in cinema mode at 22 foot lamberts on a 1.0 gain screen which I believe is good. I am also trying figure if I should go with an AT screen for the best audio experience.

Some additional info on equipment, I am using HTD level 2 speakers (towers in the front) for all five and 4 atmos speakers in the ceiling (not sure which ones yet); Sub MFW-15 with custom seaton amp and I'll be building a Marty cube with an 18" ultimax; receiver is tbd (currently have a Yamaha v667 several years old). Note the room will have acoustic treatments added also.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks an advance!

Sorry it took so long to reply....your Thread got shuffled down the list pretty quickly.

Acoustic Transparent Screens are quite popular these days....with the DIY Spandex version getting a LOT of attention. But there is a lot needing to be done to accommodate any AT Screen, and in truth, unless a room supports a wide enough Screen to encompass all 3 of the Front Speakers, the resulting loss of image quality in many instances does not justify any gains acoustically as far as Center Channel Placement alone. Unless of course one has 7' Ceilings and wants a "Wall Sized" screen.

If you can smooth the Wall where you want a screen to be...paint the Screen. I have done quite a few painted Wall screen using 5040ub units, and at 130" 2.39:1 you'll begetting a spectacular image using a fairly simple but advanced DIY Formula such a Silver Fire v2.5 N/C

Essentially you image will resemble a huge LCD screen, and some actually compare them to OLEDs in a Dark Room when the sheer size difference is taken into consideration.

Here are good examples...a video and some Screen shots of a 143" diagonal 2.39:1 :

Thanks so much for getting back to me, it might be easier to have a picture understand what I'm working with. I do like the idea of the Silver Fire 2.5, those pictures are amazing! One question do you think I'd be able to use my Wagner Home Decor HVLP with this? I used it for cabinets and it did do great job with a fine mist.

Back to the room so the reason I was thing AT was to try to maximize the width since I'm capped on height. Theres a HVAC vent at the top so I'm limited to 81" height, with the speakers that brings it down to 56" as the subs and center have a max height of 25", and the width 149" but minus the speakers your at 125ish. As I'm still working on this room what your thoughts as I can modify things?

I'd either pick a different Wall or build the Screen Wall out to be flush with the Plenum. Being only partially across the Front makes it look....well you know....it looks.

Build the Wall out and yes....you could easily go Acoustically Transparent....while making the room's appearance and acoustics much more suitable to your needs.

You have HTD Level 2 Towers for all 5 Channels (incl. Center) ...so you pretty much backed yourself into the Acoustic Screen Camp. But...that might be best anyway.

Is the Vent in/on that Plenum underneath and toward the Right End? (as viewed) Is it a Supply or Return?...not that it matter much, such things are easily altered.

In such a "Open Slate" condition, the first thing I would do is decide what plan makes the whole thing the most conducive to being incredible on every possible point.

I'd take into consideration the "Now" and the "Future", especially if allowing for the "Future" does'nt impact the affordability of the "Now".

That may mean changing plans, nothing new at these stages. With the Subs you have going in, and the necessary Framing that is to come making the area a structurally sound space, I'd have to venture your options should remain both open as well as directed toward a budget-oriented but little to no compromise approach.

Considering a Spandex Screen Wall has solved the concerns of many recent Members taking similar approaches. T'would seem that Plenum is paramount in your plans.

Haha so true that partial front would make a it really odd. I really wanted to choose a different spot but I have no other suitable spot in the basement also the projector throw distance makes this really the only viable spot. The other headache is the support pole at 10feet from the current wall.

Option 1 use the duct wall and I can do a larger screen in 2.35:1 (128"x54") and atmos 5.2.4 but I have the wall headache. (first image)

Option 2 rotate everything to the side wall but now I have to go with 16:9 to maximize space and get smaller screen (115"x57") and max atmos of 5.2.2. (also rear wall so no space behind me, this might be the best option for viewing but not audio)

That duct is a supply it sits out of it really not in or on it, its under the beams. I really wish I could move that but that's not gonna happen way to much work involved with that. I'm certainly open to ideas as we are really early in the build process so I can make big changes (with managements approval ;))

Yuk to that 2nd screen option. A Build-Out across the 1st Wall area is your best bet.

Things can get a bit cloudy with the back-n-forth. Check your PM for a contact number you can use to receive and answer some specific questions. I have your two images to reference my questions. MUCH faster that way...if you want to, that is.
