Just finishing painting my theater and have some thoughts and need some opinions about the screen wall. I have a motorized screen and I have painted the ceiling dark dark brown and have a 12" dark trim around the ceiling to match the soffit. The pics don't show the band painted all the way down to 12" on the screen wall or side wall. I was thinking that I might want to paint the screen wall the dark brown along with the little wall to the left of the screen. The door in the picture will be dark brown regardless. What do you guys think? How important is it to have a dark screen wall. The brown I have on there already is fairly dark but obviously not as dark as what I have on the roof. One funny thing about the color on the roof is that the color is actually called "nerd". My wife doesn't like the idea of painting that wall dark brown but if it will make a huge difference in the HT experience I will do it.

thanks,

Brendin

The door will be the dark brown whether or not I paint the wall dark brown. Maybe I should try it now and see what it looks like with the projector on. It's a hard sell to the wife to paint it dark brown.

Sometimes I wonder if "I have to convince the wife" is code for "I'm ashamed to admit I care about interior design."

I've caught myself using the WAF as an excuse more than once. Now I just fess up and say, "You know, I care about how my house looks, and I think that might look like crap!"

Just ribbin' ya man. But seriously, the aesthetics of a darkly colored screen wall are quite nice. And here I'm strictly talking about the interior design aspect.

So are you saying you think a dark wall there would look like crap? Not enough contrast?

"nerd" are you kidding? You gotta go with the nerd on the wall. A dark screen wall definitely improves the experience imho. I painted my screen wall black and the screen appears to float in front of it. Well, it kind of does, but it looks great and contrast is excellent. Remember, it's just paint. If you decided later that you don't like it, you can always paint it another color. But I'll bet you'll like it best dark, especially if you're painting the door nerd too.

I'm saying I think that the room would look quite nice with a black (or other darkly colored) screen wall.

As far as what would make the picture on your screen look better, the general consensus is that dark is better because dark colors reduce light scatter and boost the ANSI contrast of your projector.

People have been making their screen walls black forever and a day, and that seems to work well for people. My latest qaundry is that a black screen wall seems to emphasize the poor black levels of my digital projector, but that's something that I'm still testing out, so I wouldn't let that deter you.

Go dark.

Seeing that you have a motorized screen, I would infer that this room may not be a dedicated theater but perhaps a "media room" of some kind. If you roll the screen up and use the room for other things then aesthetics may take precedence. One quick way to see if you'll like it painted or not would be to buy some fabric that's dark brown and apply it to the wall. Then watch some movies to see how you like it.

Yeah...I painted the line and left the wall the lighter color...will try some brown fabric later to see if it makes a difference.
