I have a JVC DILA G 15 projector and have never seen the screen door effect before tonight. On HBO's presentation of Forest Gump it could be seen easily up to 20 feet from the screen. Changing the channels to compare other high definition channels, revealed that Showtime's Green Mile and CSI were fine as always (no screeen door). Did anyone else see this? As I said before, this screen door effect is a first for my set up and it was very apparent. Any ideas why this happened?

I can only tell you that on my setup this movie was incredibly superb. The clarity was utterly stunning as was the depth of color. It simply doesn't get any better than this.

Forest Gump is an older OAR transfer.

It has letterboxing top and bottom unlike

most of the recent vintage 16:9 zoomovision HBO transfers.

Unfortunately the older transfers tend to have

Pro-Logic encoded audio rather than DD5.1/AC3.

screendoor effect is common to all LCD,DILA and DLP projectors. But it is less in the DILS series and only visible with certain color in the scene. Sky Blue and whites will make the screendoor effect visible with the DILA. Darker more saturated color it disappears. LCD's are the worst for screen door. Spot checking a broadcast may not have shown the SD effect since the spot check you did probably didn't have the right colors to bring it out on a DILA.

If it didn't get any better then this then I think I would find another hobby.

:)

I saw part of it with my D-ILA projector and as usual there was no 'screendoor effect'. The movie just doesn't have much resolution.

I think what you saw was a grainy transfer. I switched back and forth from sho-hd to hbo-hd and I thought it was screen door as well. I concluded that the transfer was grainy.

It was definately screen door and the tiny squares were easily visable. I wonder if it may be a HBO high definition issue that only a few people experience only at certain times. (See the post titled HBO- high definition quality problem)

Only caught a snippet on my RPTV, which displays virtually all of the incoming signal, but enough to tell it wasn't an especially bad transfer. Pretty good 1080i here. Just speculation, but perhaps if screendoor was visible on some D-ILAs, it has something to do with improper operation a particular projector's progressive/interlace circuits, which only come into play with 1080i programs. This circuit displays all the 1080i pixels possible with D-ILA panel resolution during the first 1/60 sec, then 'stuffs' any leftover pixels into the next 1/60-sec 1080i field. -- John

Frank, find another hobby. :) :)
Ha Ha ha!

Since most of what I see on HBO looks noticably better then Gump, there is no need.

Frank-

For once I agree with you on PQ. Gump looked less res than Green Mile. I think it was just a bad film print, quite grainy and noisy. But, I still enjoyed the story and for me this is 90% of what I have my home theater for. After the story, then I want the best damn picture and sound I can afford. I believe some, no, most on this forum watch the technology more than the story. I get paid to watch technology, when it comes to HT and HDTV, I just want to relax and enjoy.

Guys, I have been complaining about what I call the VERTICAL BLIND EFFECT for a long time now. They are fainyt vertical lines that can be seen on any moderately dark image. It is TERRIBLE and completely destroys the HD picture. Some see this and some do not. But it has been confirmed to exist on different setups, so it is not an equipment issue.

FIlms that are afflicted include:

FORREST GUMP, CAST AWAY, BACK TO SCHOOL and the last half of SILVERADO. There are more, but I do not recall the titles at the moment.

Matt, What setup do you have?

I have seen the vertical banding, but on all 1080i content when the signal is coming in as Y-Pb-Pr. Through the Toshiba DST-3000 sat. receiver.

Don,

Now THAT totally amazes me. I can't believe you saw MORE detail in Green Mile than FG. It wasn't even close on my setup. One was mind blowing in detail and the other was essentially DVD quality. WOW! It's amazing how differently we can see things!

Frank,

You know I love you, but I am considering getting you a new pair of glasses. :)

Panasonic 47WX49 with DISH 6000 receiver. Monster Component cables (I have tried different cables, just to make sure it was something simple).

My father has the exact same TV and receiver and he gets the same problem. It's on HBO's end.
