SD quality for RPS?

371 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  arvingx
I have been reading reviews of DLP, LCD and DILA for quite awhile. All seem to have their quirks but I am wondering which delivery process makes for good quality SD. I use a Dish system now, not HD yet as their HD box is still pretty steep. We view from about 12 feet and are looking at a 42" to 50" and our display space is right at 50" wide. Any help or comments is appreciated.

Dish Network will lease you their HDTV box for $5/mo. That's hardly steep...

CRT projection generally offers the best picture on SD channels. Popular models in that range include:

51" Hitachi 51S715

51" Sony 51WS520

47" Panasonic 47X54 (and 53" 53X54)

46" Hitachi 46S510

Welcome to the forums. If you have a serious interest in SD quality, and have the space, you might look into a big-dish (BUD) system. "Note" threads atop a few forums here outline these (multiple-band) programming sources; using the search feature here reveals other threads. BUD offers very high quality analog and digital SD (plus HD) without the excessive compression of cable or DBS. Some CRT-based RPTVs (as well as FPs) let you view 480-line SD without undergoing the upconversion--often poor quality--required for fixed-pixel displays. -- John
Thanks for the replies. I did not realize Dish would lease the HDTV box. When I inquired the rep. talked only of the purchase angle. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'll ask about the lease next call.

We have been looking at the smaller RPTV's (40" to 50") because of our available space (50.25"W x 36.25"H x 19"D) and their PQ is so impressive at least at the retailers. (Although I did see all the LCD's have what I guess is a refresh problem at BB during a football game clip yesterday?). Also, the sales rep.at BB told me he has stopped promoting the Samsungs to customers due to high returns lately.

So you can see my concerns. Spending around $4,ooo for TV, cables, Surge protecter and extended warranty has me on edge when I read and see the various quirks? And I am not a great tech guy.

The main reason I inquired about SD quality and the LCD vs DLP vs DILA is that so much of what's available still seems to be SD broadcast. Like most folks we are looking for the best of both worlds since we watch a good deal of regular network stuff.

So any additional thoughts are appreciated. (This really is a helpful website)

Don't buy cables or a surge protector from the same place you buy the TV. You'll pay 5x more than ncecessary. If you want an extended warranty, try to negotiate a lower price.
Thanks again for the tips!
