SD Upconversion on a Hitachi RPTV 57S500

Hi guys! A newbie here... This is my first post so better be nice... Sorry if this is posted before but I never saw an extensive discussion on this topic.

I own a Hitachi 57S500 and I know a lot of you guys own this unit too. My query is does this Toshiba HD-AI HD-DVD player does a good job on this RPTV? What is the best connection - HDMI or component? My unit has been ISF'ed by bgarner.

Thanks in advance :)

Well HDMI might be a little better than component ... but then again maybe not. They are close.

Use both and figure it out for yourself. Not the same on all TVs.

Hope you got the full meal deal of calibrations on your set versus just the grayscale and service menu work.

Greetings 2u2!

Yeah, that's is what I got. How did you know? I inquired you about calibrating my unit last year but due to some 'economic adversity' I was not able to. Anyway, as per the heading of my post I was supposed to asked the upconversion of SD DVD on the the AI...

TIA

No upconversion on component. HDMI only. So the picture will be better on HDMI ... I guarantee it. ;)

Aside from seeing annoying horizontal scanlines, I'm not sure how much upconversion helps CRT RPTV. I have a 57" Sony (KP-57WS520) and upconverting actually softens the image to where the image is not quite as sharp. However, it's a trade-off: avoid seeing scanlines or soften the picture slightly. I go back and forth on this as far as what I prefer.

One theory about upconverting and softness compared to using 480p (in layman terms) is that the 1080 scanlines overlap, thereby you can lose some detail upconverting a 480 source to 1080i. Of course, at 480p the scanlines do not overlap and you see all the detail.
