It's hard to tell without see the full specs, but judging by the videos the disadvantages compared to WDTV are:

1. It's max resolution is 1080i, not 1080p

2. No HDMI port (at least I didn't see one). Image quality will suffer if it's not HDMI. 720p videos will not look like HD.

3. Proprietary storage. I rather be able to plug in any type of USB storage, rather than having cartridge storage.

Again, hard to tell without looking at the official specs. Have to wait until it comes out.

1.remote have some more buttons. (more is good).

2.on rear, no hdmi seen only component. plus look like svideo (no way).

3.only can use "dockable" drive system for small go drives. (not regular usb=lame).

4.129 bucks only for dock, not come with drive, 500GB package 299?? (wth)

5.1080i no mkv (wtf).

6.Western Digital's WD TV Media Player, which also starts at $130 (liar $99 at launch).

point #3 + #4 = less terrabyte 4 u.

point #5 = no scene release HD batman movie 4 u.

point #6 = liar liar panty hole on fire.

Article says usb but really only "drive system" usb.

WD TV is better than that seagate thing even without trying out seagate thing. Plus WD TV look nicer and look count cuz you gonna look at it alot and need to show visitor that stop by and ask what it be

WD TV = good for noob. What good for noob is good for all.

More competition from major company is good thing = better WD TV firmwarez upgrade features = more paychex bonu$ for $cottWD.

P.S. PopPron crap and korean breadmaking looking device tvix do not count as competitor cuz they are not really companies just a dic in box...

According to the article it can only play up to 1080i, not 1080p.

If that's the case, good luck to Seagate trying to sell this device at that price point.

They'll sell a ton of these, probably 10 times more than PCH. Just not to anyone on this forum. They are trying to market this to baby boomers that just learned how to use a digital camera. You can tell by the video where they start by not showing you any of the technical aspects, except that you can attach the drive to your computer via dock. Then they show you that you can see your pictures on the TV. My mother would probably like this thing when she learns how to use a digital camera.

The WD device does not (yet?) support DVD menu. Does anyone knows if this one has that feature?

As of now, I already purchased three of the WDs, but I have to convince myself and others that I'm playing a high-tech version of my VCR so I don't need DVD menu... (but I do).

Yes, it does support DVD menu. Quote from Seagate website:

"Q: Can the FreeAgent Theater play ripped DVDs? Blu-Rays?

A: The FreeAgent Theater is designed to play the file and folder structures that are used for DVDs. We felt that was important to include as many consumers make DVDs of their home movies, complete with menuing of scene selections. We fully support this menuing. So if a consumer is able to get content from a DVD onto their hard drive, without any associated digital rights management locks, then yes, the Theater product will play it".
