For my L/R Mains I am using a pair of Acoustic Research 302s Link to Speakers on Classic Speaker Page from 1995. I have been told by the future wife I have to keep those till we get a house and I get a media room. The center channel we have though I am allowed to replace. It is a Bose VCS-10, great small size but just doesn't sound good. I am not sure if I am limited by it on speaker choice or not but the receiver we have is an older Onkyo TX-DS696. I want to replace that as well but am trying to hold off for now on that.

I have been looking at center channels online for the past several days and just can not figure out if anything would work well with the speakers I have now till I can upgrade the rest. I have mostly been looking at the Polk models. I want to spend around 200 if possible but can go up a little bit. It seems the receiver is at 6 ohms and most all the speakers I have seen are 8 ohms.

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it greatly!

Unless AR had a matching center for those speakers, you're not likely to find a center that has the same timbre of the ARs. In which case no center is going to sound right.

So as you will be buying new speakers in the future, you might give some thought to what brand you might buy at that time and buy a center from that company now. Then its just a matter of buying the matching mains later.

Or just do w/o a center until you buy all new.

you can use 8 ohm speakers with your receiver by changing the impedance selector on the back or your reciver to "6 ohms or greater" if its not there already

i suggest waiting a bit then once you do get your media room buy the whole set at once so you can but from the same make and modle line and have a timbre matching system and then annoy your future with it

Go with a phantom center for now. Just put the center to none and that is it. You may need to adjust the angle of the toe-in to get it to be more seamless. Trust me this will sound better than your current or another center.

Save the money and buy the front three together for a proper front stage.

I will have to try that out today. Do I still let the Computer and PS3 send the DTS/Dolby D signal or have them downmix? Or just let the receiver deal with that?

Thanks for the input. I was thinking I may be able to get away with a Center and a Pair of bookshelfs for now. Then move the bookshelfs to surrounds and get some floorstanders when we get a house in a year or two. With my luck though the model line would discontinue and I would be in the same place I am now.
