I'm looking to move my Wii on to another flat panel. I'm not to fond of the idea of someone hurling a Wii remote at my Kuro + we've wanted a second TV in the house for a while now. No way can i spend what i did on the Kuro but I wanted to get something good for both a second TV for HD cable, the odd movie when not watching it on the Kuro and of course mainly for the Wii. Cannot decide between LCD or Plasma. Plasma just seems like the better technology that LCD is always trying to live up to but having a Pioneer Plasma as my main TV, some part of me wants to try an LCD just for the sake of it but the safe side of me wants to stick with a plasma maybe a 42 entry level 1080p Panny or Samsung i am seeing a lot of stuff now around the 800 price range in both technologies.

Any advice ?

Thanks for listening and advising as always.

LCD is OK if you can live with the limited viewing angle. I have a plasma, not a Kuro..., and opted to add an LCD. The picture is fine as long as you are straight on the screen. move to the left, right or stand up and it gets pretty crappy pretty fast.

Needless to say my 3rd TV is a plasma. I'm extremely happy with my P42X1(my third TV...)and see no issues with it. Going to the 1080 model should serve you well.

Great advice .. good to hear from someone who has been in the same situation. I'm leaning going down the second plasma route based on what folks have said and what i've read.

Another question ?

Most online buying guides say it doesn't really matter if you get a 720p or 1080p on a 40" display. But if want to connect a blu ray or HD games console to your set then would going with a 1080p set be better ? - Also the difference between a entry level set at 720p and 1080p seems to be only $150 most places. Is the extra $150 worth the future proofing ?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

I set my Panny P42X1 720p next to my Sammy PN50A650 1080p to fine tune the settings, the Sammy was professionally calibrated, and if you looked very hard you could see a small difference in detail. For me it was insignificant. It all depends on how important it is. A Blu ray will work fine on the X1 sets. The P42X1 has been going for 599, so factor that into your thinking.

I've had a 6020 but I sold it while it was still worth some money since I no longer watched movies on it since going front projection. I bought a 55" B650 LCD and I have to say that it is quite nice and can look better than my 6020 at times. The Kuro was the ultimate for movies (but just too tiny compared to front projection now
).

For the Wii I appreciated not having an ABL on an LCD as bright scenes dim on the plasma too much. But like a poster stated above when you go off angle the picture quality does go down somewhat (much more so than I realized). In bright lighting it's not as bad but if you don't have much light in the room the quality will go down significantly).

For a 2nd TV though it'd be hard to pass up a 42" Samsung or Panasonic plasma for ~$700. I'm just not sure an LCD in that price range would compare.

I have similar concerns as you, haven't picked up the Wii yet but probably will eventually. And I wouldn't use it with my Kuro either.

I picked up a 151 and two Panasonic 42G10s a few months ago. All three are great displays. The Panny's can be had for about 30% less than when they debuted, when I got them-- but the Pioneer has gone up in price.

Check out the Panasonic 42G10. It's a nice display at a decent price.

Yeh i was in BB the other day looking at the various options and they had a 720p panny X1 it was only 650 and its PQ was blowing away LCD sets that were 2 to 3 times the price of the X1.

So i came home and found a great deal on the newer 1080p panny S1 and just ordered that it was only 180 more than the X1 on clearance at BB.

On a side note ... i've never really shopped online before but Bing the new microsoft search engine has a really cool shopping area where you get between 2 - 14 % cashback on your purchases when you shop at online stores who are part of the bing cashback program. I think with all the crap we buy in our household i could easily get a few hundred bucks in cash a year from the program and still get my air miles from the credit card on top. Worth checking out if you've not done so before.
