How will you deal with the NetFlix price increase?

September is just around the corner so I thought I'd post a poll to see how many folks are going to deal with the price increase.

When I first heard of the price increase I went streaming only and signed up with Blockbuster for discs, one week after signing up with Blockbuster they still didn't mail any discs so I cancelled. Blockbuster has a one month free trial so it didn't cost me anything but if they take over one week to send a disc it's not worth it.


I bit the bullet and accepted the price increase, at least Netflix mails discs in a timely manner.

I’m going to wait and see how many interesting shows come out on the fall lineup for OTA DVRing. If there are enough to keep me and the Mrs. queued up, I might put the streaming on hold for a few months.


I’ll keep one disc at a time coming to get BRs for movie nights.


I’m not interested in trying to send (a rather pointless) message to a company. Just interested in spending my money for maximum benefit.

I still think my one disk + streaming plan is a good value, IMO opinion, the best entertainment value out there right now .. averaging 8 BD's a month + some documentaries and a few movies on streaming .. keeping the plan ..

You left out one option--keep streaming and reduce discs which is what I plan to do.


I will reduce discs to one out at a time--I currently have the 2 disc plan. Cost will be a little less than what I pay now and I should be able to get the same amount of satisfaction I get now--which varies unfortunately as far as being able to get new releases. When I am on a roll with new releases, 2 discs is great--but sometimes I end up with 2 discs that I really could live without--and I am using the streaming more. So if I can't get the new releases I want, I will either buy them or stream them from Amazon (I also use Amazon Prime streaming)--or stream them from iTunes to ATV. I realize this is not what anyone would call a cheap option but that is not my prime motivator since watching movies at home is a major form of entertainment for me.

My plan already changed to the new pricing structure when I made a change last month. The price for streaming and BD went down $4 from my old plan prices.


Although I plan on dropping back down again from the eight out to the two or three out plan.

I am leaning towards disks only.


On the other hand, I am thinking about dumping Netflix and switching to Red Box. I am not disgruntled and it's not necessarily a result of the price increase. Just not watching as many movies as I used to and I am not renting enough to offset the monthly fee.

Yeah, you left off the "reduce discs" option.


I am sticking with my 3 disc + Blu-ray + streaming plan (which will be about $28/month, or a $4 increase).


I am considering going to 2 discs though. I have around 100 movies in my instant queue, so I probably really don't need that many discs. Still, it's likely I'll just keep what I have.

I'll drop streaming and stick with discs only until I finish the Sopranos, the Wire and Dexter. After that I may switch to streaming only or cancel all together.

I have one disc (BD) and streaming plan too. It is difficult for me to give up the disc part because there are obscure movies that don't get licensed for streaming. For instance, NF had two of the Spanish TV series which was part of their version "After Dark Horror Fest" and the other 4 episodes on disc. Most of those were excellent. And sometimes I want to view the extras or commentary even if I stream a movie. I have noticed that Vudu is beginning offer extras with the movies though.


Seems as we move into the future our options are less and less. These are the "good old days".

Dropped 2 DVDs+BRs at a time and kept streaming. Went to Block Buster for the 2 DVDs/BR/Games at a time. With BB, I received the disks the same time as Netflix. And I can drop off the disks to my local BB(received notication in less then an hour),received the next two disks in 2 days. My savings is almost 2 bucks going this route!

Voted keep streaming only but i'm going to drop that next month also. I'm going to go with blockbuster for 1 out at a time blu-ray plan.

I've been using Netflix since 1999. I'm on the 4-out plan, but grandfathered in at the 3-out price. I'll have to see just what happens when the price change occurs. Under my account settings, it seems to show a big price jump as it shows me going to the full 4-out price, but I don't know if it will actually do that. If so, I'll probably drop do 3-out anyways.


I have no plans on going one or the other exclusively. Each has their own strengths. Streaming is great for TV series and and older stuff, disks for true HD (I have the BD option) and extras and for companies (HBO!) that are terrified of streaming.

We are on the one disc (BD) plus streaming and will stay with that for now. Our DSL has been perfect all summer for "HD" on Netflix and we have tons of content yet to stream, plus we get about 6-8 discs a month, so me and my wife are happy campers right now. I plan to wait until next year and see how the re-licensing battles play out. I expect Netflix will either sink or swim based on how they renegotiate their content licenses. That's when we will decide if any changes need to to me made.

Contrary to what we initially thought, we've found Netflix streaming probably worth the $8/mo., so we'll keep it--at least for a while. Have never been signed up for their disk program. We don't watch enough movies to justify it. Maybe one a week. Sometimes none for a month or two.

I've been steadily emptying my queues since the announcement and will follow through on my original plan to drop netflix entirely. About half of my instant queue is available on hulu+, so I'll use that for the next several months at least. And frequent outages and their lackluster selection have made my decision even easier. On top of that they continue to make changes to the website to the point it's practically useless. They ignore tens of thousands of complaints about it and have no email support at all, as if they're purposely trying to avoid their customers.


Hopefully many others like me will send the message that this huge price increase is unaccaptable. If they had handled it honestly and done it gradually, I may have accepted it. But the way they did it shows only arrogance and contempt for their loyal customers. I'm actually looking forward to September.

I have dropped completely and now share my brother's streaming plan.

It's totally a business(financial) decision so I know Netflix will understand

I meant it more in a psychological context, not that I'll willfully accept any price increase if it's done gradually. And I dumped cable years ago for playing games like this.


If Netflix had been honest, they would have said we want to exit the DVD business, but our customers still want DVD's. To force the issue we are going to simply charge an outrageous price for them rather than make all DVD content available via streaming which would actually make our customers happy. The studios want us to offer mostly B-list crap via streaming that wouldn't possibly make money any other way, then they can continue to sell the good stuff on disc or PPV which we will no longer offer at a reasonable price.
