Seeking advice on entry AVR =)

I've had odd bits pieced together, but trying to get something decent together. Upgraded a few pieces and next in line is a new receiver. This is for a small house bedroom, like 12x15 or so. Mostly playing PS3, blurays, and some stuff off the computer.

Right now I have:

-Klipsch Synergy Sub-12, C-3, and S-3

-Infinity Entra Two floor speakers, really old, been using those for like 7 years.. I can post the specs if needed. prob wont be replacing until I have a fairly large budget, and a bigger room, unless there's some cheap improvement available

-upgrading to a nicer hdtv sometime later

Looking at:

Pioneer VSX-919AH-K

Denon AVR-1709

Any advice between the two or some other avr? Thanks in advance!

The 1709 doesn't handle audio over HDMI, you'll need the 1909 for that. If you go to 6ave I believe it's not much over $400 right now which is an amazing deal for a very good receiver. The 1909 pretty much has it all....
Refurbished HK 254 from HK's eBay store can't be beat for the money. I think the going rate is $220 shipped. Another option is the Denon 1610. I'm not a fan of the new Pioneer receivers as they've skimped on their amps too much IMO.
I know the Denon is a great receiver, but I'm chiming in as a VSX-919 owner here.

I've had it for about 3 weeks now and am very pleased.

Everything is as expected, if not better.

Audessy setup was easy, if you don't like to tinker with EQ's. The EQ can be a bit confusing, but allows very fine tuning of the sound.

You can store different EQ settings (up to six), so if you want one for movies and one for music, etc.

The only complaints I have are: It runs HOT. It needs lots of ventilation, and the space between it and a disc player is not enough. It literally was too hot for my hand to touch when something was placed within a couple of inches.

It also doesn't upconvert video signals. It only switches 480i to 480p.

The VSX-1019 will upconvert for you.

The remote is a little confusing at first, but once you handle it for a while, it will start to make sense to you. I'm sure this is true for a lot of receivers though.

It pushes my JBL E60, EC35 & E20 speakers beautifully...

thanks for the reply so far. how are the lower end yamahas? there's a couple that only support 5.1, and I don't particularly need 7.1.

Does carrying audio over HDMI gonna affect the quality of playing PS3 games much? It'll be 1 less cable but I don't care about that. A majority of the time will be spent with games, some will be through the computer which only has optical out, and then a good bluray once a while, not very often.

It will effect Audio. HDMI is the only input capable of alot of the newer codecs due to DRM copy protection. They force you to use HDMI. I would agree though I own a 919 Pioneer. It is a great receiver. My biggest complaint is the heat. It could defenitly work as a space heater. I dont get it, the thing has a fan in it but I have yet to see it turn on. Is there a way to adjust the fan I wonder to turn on more?? I dunno.
although more then I'd like to pay.. the denon 1909/789 does look like a solid receiver. for that price range is it a better pick than the Yamaha RX-V665BL?

IMO the Denon is the better choice. Yamaha does poorly on the test bench (might be 35w/ 7 channels driven) where Denon is closer to the stated numbers. I really like the Audyssey Multi EQ room EQ. The only problems with Denon is 1) can be harder to setup. 2) It also doesn't have pre-outs if you wanted to add a separate amplifier later on.

Yamaha 665 does have pre-outs to add a separate amp.
ah. i think i am sold on the 1909. thaaaanks everyone! looking forward to getting this. I think the receiver I have is almost a decade old >_>

I hear Denon has problems handshaking with Sony TV's. Having said that I bought a Pioneer 919, and wish I would have gotten the denon 590. Commercials too loud on the pioneer. And the heat is crazy.

+1 The Denon 1610/590 is also worth a look. It will upconvert signals to HDMI, but not upscale. Not a big deal as it's likely your TV will take care of that for you.
