Seeking advice on the video set up

Hello. I am thinking about some changes in my set up. Currently it looks like that:

HTPC, WD Media Player, upconverting DVD player, laptop, Faroudja DVP-1010 for laserdisc player to Monoprice 4x2 switcher to 42 inch LCD and NEC 6PG+. Signal is HDMI/DVI. I use HD Furry 1 and Buen 2200 box for gamma with NEC. I am very happy with this set up at 1080i.

I want to try to make it little simpler and eliminate HD Furry and 2200 box. I could use a Faroudja to run to NEC an analog RGB after transcoding HDMI. This would allow me to use 1440x960p which looks good too/I did only a quick trial/.

I do not have a dedicated room with perfect light control so low gamma is not crucial IMO.

Please let me know what you think.

Robert.

Why bother if what you have is working ? Beun's transcoder does a great job with gamma, I would leave it in, even if your viewing environment isn't ideal, that's no reason to put yourself in a situation where you CAN'T make a good picture...
As I said I am trying to simplify the whole video chain. Our projectors are analog beasts so less should be better. I do not have long cables run etc. Besides I am tempted to try a progressive signal and 720p does not look good for me.

low gamma is always important IMO, just because you don't have perfect light control doesn't mean that when you watch movies at night the dark scenes should be ink blobs.

I don't see any way to simplify, A Moome card is the simplest but they're NEC XG only. What I don't see is a Blue Ray player? That would replace the DVD player and provide HD content + upscaling. For a 16:9 screen run the BD to the Faroudja. Ideally scaled down to 1440 x 810 but the Faroudja only offers 1366x768 which should still be superior to 1080i. Hopefully HDCP doesn't trip up the scaler?
hello. Thank you for advice. If I understood corectly you would leave Beun box as it is now. I will try tonight/snow in NYC/:-l and run Faroudja in analog mode without Hdfurry. I use computer for ripping br disc and play them using wd player or laptop. My scaler allows for 1440x960p and pg plus displays it at 63khz. I will try a better set up today to check how it really looks. I wish I could fit xg that I have in existing cabinet. I would be able to run 1080p. Thank you again.
Hello RobNEC and welcome to these parts

Get yourself a Moome card (I knwo they are more expensive than the fury offerings!)...and an Oppo BR player and you will be set for a couple of years.

...they are well worth the PQ gain and money spent. (If you get an external then you have the option to use it on your future upgrades!)

Good luck

Hello. Thank you for all input. As I have found out I can't change anything because of copy protection. Faroudja shuts off analog RGB output for anything but laserdisc. I watch a lot of them so scaler has to stay. I think that I will only try to find a different progressive output. 1440x960p is too high for PG+. It displays it but it is too soft. Dragnam suggested 1300x768p which looks promising. Thank you. Robert.

1440 x 960 is a dinosaur, it was basically just a way to double standard DVD 720 x 480. trouble is both of those are 1.5:1 aspect ratio. If you scale down BD native 1920 x 1080, which is 1.77, down to 1.5 you get scaling errors. 1440 x 810 would be ideal but 1300 x 768 is OK at 1.69:1
