Hello,

These forums have been incredibly helpful - many thanks for the reviews and feedback from all. I've been doing a ton of research and am I finally now starting to sense the home theatre/sound system light at the end of the tunnel. :)

I wanted to lay out the specifics of what I am leaning towards and get feedback on it. Also, I still have a couple of holes that I need some help with.

First the space: relatively small living room, 15’ wide by 12’ deep. 1960s construction San Francisco apartment building. I’m in a top floor, heavily carpeted unit. Tenants are on the younger side and no complaints so far from playing my Yamaha RX-V2300 and Energy Connoisseur speakers late at night at decent volumes.

Music and Movies are equally important to me. Value priorities are: solid performance, aesthetic appeal, and superior value.

Here is what I have in mind so far:

TV: Panasonic 50†plasma, model 7UY. Seems to offer the best picture/price ratio on the market. I've read great things about Visual Apex for purchasing over the phone/internet.

Receiver: May initially give my Yami a whirl but leaning towards upgrading to the Marantz 8500 when it comes out since (unless I 2-zone it, is that advisable with my Yami model?) I’ll still need another receive to power my Connoisseurs in the bedroom. I like the reputation of Marantz on build quality, musical sound quality, and the DVI switching is appealing (if I correctly understand how that technology works, see Cables below). It also seems possible to get great deals on Marantz over the internet unlike some of the other premium brands I'm considering. Other receivers I've looked at are the Denon AVR-3805 and 4802R (although this one seems a bit dated). On the higher end also considering the Rotel RSX-1067 and Arcam AVR300, but these may be more receiver than my speakers, space, overall system and budget warrant.

Speakers: 5 channel surround sound

Fronts & Center: I would like to wall mount my front and center speakers. I’m space constrained as my wall has slightly less than 8 feet across in usable space of which the Panny is going to eat up roughly 48 inches. The Martin Logan Frescos at 8.25 inches across and with their low profile seem like a nice option. Concerned about sound quality tradeoff with wall mounted speakers, but I’m basically committed to wall mounting. Whatever I can do to minimize the sound quality tradoff that comes with wall mounts is my goal. The Magnepan wall mounts also looks interesting. They take up more space but cost considerably less. Does anyone know if both these planars require a power source?

Rear Surroud Speakers: It would seem wasteful to spend the nearly $1k/per Fresco for the rears. Any good suggestions here?

Subwoofer: Looking to stay in whatever front/center speaker family I end up with. If Martin Logan then probably either the Depth or Grotto.

DVD Player: Currently own the Sony DVP-NS755V. I would like to wait awhile with HD DVD/Blue Ray on the horizon so I may try to get away with this unit for the time being. Does this sound like the right call?

HD Input: Comcast HD Cable. I’ve heard the new Comcast box has DVI, can anyone confirm this? Looking forward to Comcast HD DVR, does anyone have any news about that and whether that box will also include HD or will you still need to two boxes from Comcast if you want digital cable, DVR, and HD?

Connector cables: ??? no clue for speakers. The thinner the cables I can use connecting my rears to the receiver and the higher the price/quality/length ratio, the better. I would like to minimize the number of cables going to and from the plasma so I’m wondering if the right setup is to run DVI cables from both my DVD player and my Cable STB to my Marantz, and then run the single DVI to the Panasonic? Since the Panny doesn’t even have speakers DVI should work for me and there is no advantage to HDMI, right? If anything, HDMI is a fatter, more expensive cable.

I think that about covers it. Again, any feedback and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Everything looks good to me. One thing though - I'd wait a bit on a receiver replacement until HDMI switching is more commonplace (rather than the DVI in the Marantz). There's no advantage to DVI over HDMI other than the trend in source components and displays is away from DVI toward HDMI...

I use the dual zone on my Yamaha with great results, and I'd recommend picking up a good qualiity used 2ch amp for bedroom duty, and using the yammie to provide the input.

That sounda like a wise suggestion.

It has seemed to me that receivers are lagging in advances right now and that I would be well served by holding off on upgrading for as long as possible.

I've bene really happy with my Yamaha and Sony DVD player and I've only had them for two years. Reducing them to bedroom CD playing only duty seemed like a terrible waste, but because I was making the big jump to plasma and surround sound I felt like I almost had to upgrade everything else too. Doing this in stages is certainly a lot more economical.

I'm a wiring newbie so in terms of the wiring I'll probably need about 25' of cable to connect my Yamaha to a two channel amp in the bedroom. The thinner the better as it will be running down a main hallway along the carpet. The color whie would also help hide it. And then I would just run my existing monster banana speaker cables from the amp to the Energy Connoisseur's, right?

Thanks!

thanks for the link! i had no idea the Moto device existed and had been wondering whether i was going to be able to get an all-in-one cable device that had: a) digital cable, b) DVR, and c) HDTV.

Given the existence of this device and how much you give up in terms of features with a CableCard I really can't see the value add for most people with even having a CableCard.

I'm nearly 100% certain that DVI is all I need with the Panny industrial seven series. Can anyone think of any reason given my described layout that I would ever want to use and HDMI cable?

I would also still love to get some feedback on the rest of the proposed system. In particular:

-what would be a good 2 channel used amp option and where to find it

-rear surround sound speakers to go with the Martin Logan Fresco

-on subwoofer, the ML Grotto vs. the Depth. I have high, vaulted ceilings rising to about 12 fee at the apex but the overall room is still rather small (12' x 15') and I'll be sitting right next to the sub. Does that mean I can save a few bucks and not notice any major performance hit with the Grotto?

-What kind of cables to use? This is probably the subject I know the least about at this point, along with installation.

-On installation, any guidance, tips or referrals in the San Francisco area would be appreciated. The installation could be a bittricky as I'm in an apartment, trying to hide all the cables, going to be placing the rack with all the STBs (receiver, cable box, DVD player, everything) in the adjoining kitchen.

I'm not wedded to the Marin Logans (especially not their subs) by any means.

What I know at this point about the Frescos is that the sound was not objectionable, the size/wall mounting works, and the aesthetics are pretty solid. I gave them a quick listen the other day and I'll need to bring back my own CDs to tell if they sing the way I want my speakers to.

I want to give the M&K MP150s a spin as well as the KEF ACE 9000s.

I've heard from a number of people that M&K is just not as good for music as it is for movies, and this would be a serious drawback for me. I know that some dispute this claim but it kinda makes sense that they're not as good when you think about the fact that they're used by pros for creating music to play in often subpar large, non-audiophile movie theatre settings. So that would leave KEF as the other serious contender, and I certainly like KEFs reputation although I'm not as big a fan of the British warm sound as I am of bright, precise clear sound that I get from say my Energy Connosieurs.
