..just was reading about this display. Anyone have any info on same? It sells around $5,000. I suppose the concensus is that plasmas are still better than LCD's at this point in time..correct?

It's noteworthy that even on the RPTV forum, I'm not sure anyone owns this display.
Magic, where can I read about this set?

Just one of many interesting products I shall never see, I guess. 17 inches deep..but only 132 pounds..lighter than a plasma of same size would be..looks like a hybrid of some sort. Wish I could see the picture.
joel brinkley reviewed it in november's sterephile guide to home theater.

he pretty much compared it to the first generation of plasma -- "the lack of black on the screen gave the whole picture a slightly veiled, washed-out look." ouch.
I am thinking that, perhaps, LCD's can compete very well dollar for dollar with plasmas. They will continue to get better as will plasmas. The first generation of plasma were extremely expensive. I thought what was interesting about this 60 inch display was the selling price of just under $5,000. And prices on plasma and LCD's will continue to fall as quality gets better and sales increase. For me, I bought a direct view Sony 34XBR800 this time compared witha $15,000 Pioneer Elite and others. The plasmas to my eyes were slightly better in over-all quality. But, I paid less than $2000 for my set. I shall pull trigger on plasma or LCD's (or some other display) in 3 or 4 years. By then, a better display will be had than now and at $1000 or more less on a 50 inch set.

magic,

smaller displays will always tend to look sharp due to their size. believe me, once you upgrade to a bigger, no make that wider display, everything will seem different.

personal opinion? i own a plasma 50." while i love it for it's look (picture wise and aesthetic value), i wouldn't hesitate owning a 60" LCD RPTV from Sony. i've seen it first hand and while it's black is not as great as plasma, it does look very good IMO. while not 4" thick (it's 17" deep i think), it's dramatically less intrusive than those behemoth CRT RPTVs. and it has no burn in problems. plus, a widescreen movie on a 60" has much much more scope than a 50." finally keep in mind that the 60" sony lcd will cost retail about the same as my internet price 50" plasma. you can certainly find it internet pricing for the sony at much less.

all in all i would pick the sony grand wega (current model) 60" if given a value choice.

LCD technology is much, much older than plasma technology. It is much, much less likely to advance at a the rate plasma technology is advancing. Sure it will get cheaper and somewhat better, but it excessively hard to imagine it being price-performance competitive with plasma anytime soon, if ever.

While refresh and viewing angle have improved, contrast ratio is still far, far from competitive and the price/size index is 2-2.5x worse than plasma.

Mark,

I think your price/size index in many posts has not been correct. The TFT LCD TV's include

a tuner (NTSC as a minimum) plus speakers and base, etc. They are integrated TV's and

can't really be compared to a plasma monitor for price purposes.

If you compare the Sharp Aquos 30" (now $5500), for example, to the Sony 32" plasma TV

(now $5K) or the $5K Hitachi model, you see that they are very close in price.

I have seen your claim in several threads that there is a 2X discrepancy in price and, in

models of comparable size and features, the difference is much less. For those who

don't want a monitor-only, the trade-off comes down to the qualities of the displays,

not price.

OK, maybe the ratio is imperfect, but the point isn't.

42" plasmas can be had for $3k with a tuner and such (e.g. the Gateway). Better ones can be had for $6k with tuner and speakers and HD resolution.

I've seen the Sasmung. On many levels, it can touch the picture quality of neither end of that plasma spectrum.
