Seiki to release inexpensive 55 to 85" Pro 4K TVs
And the best part is the pricing. Seiki current 4K TVs will drop in price, and the new Pro line-up will start at $1299 for the 55” version (SE55UY06). The 58” (SE58UY06), 65” (SE65UY06), and 85” (SE85UY06) will sell for $1599, $2199, and $7999, respectively. The Pro 4K TVs will launch in the second quarter of 2014.

The word 'Pro' is just a name. Let's see if it comes anywhere near true 'pro quality'. I am very skeptical.
The 65" is the same price as Vizio's Model-P. Considering Vizio's set is a name brand and comes with Netflix 4k content, there really is no contest.

Vizio has been a name brand for many years now, certainly more than Seiki. For their market they're aimed at they're perfectly adequate. Vizio makes some decent TVs.
I think it was genius marketing and sales. Start out making cheap tv's, sell a huge number, become #1 in North America, put that revenue toward R&D, make better tv's at good prices, profit.

I still wouldn't ever buy a Vizio. But, they've certainly improved in the last few years. As for those ridiculously cheap 4K Seiki TVs... Well, you usually get what you pay for.
Well I am pretty sure that Seki is not building the 85 4K panel themselves. They are probably getting it from AUO or BOE. Also Vizio is now getting most of their large panels from AUO or Sharp.

Maybe it's made in China vs made in Korea (Samsung) or Made in Japan for top of the line Sony. Also, as far as I understand, VIzio doesn't really make any spare parts, so if a Vizio TV breaks down outside of warranty, it's pretty difficult to get it fixed - I'm not 100% certain on that, though - it could've changed..

FWIW, I was in my local Best Buy for other reasons this afternoon, and decided to stop by to have a look at the Sony X850A.
A guy walked up and said: "Hi, I'm from Sony. Do you have any questions about this TV or is there any way I can help you?" I got him to show me a bunch of settings on the X850A for about 30 minutes that I won't go into here, but the point is that Sony was paying this persons salary to have them at this specific Best Buy helping to sell High-End Sony TVs...
I don't know if they have an employee in my Best Buy 7 days a week or only on weekends or whatever, nor whether all Best Buys are currently graced with a Sony Employee we're just the lucky ones, but whatever it is, it represents a Marketing Cost Sony bears that Vizio and Seiki do not. And that extra marketing expense needs to be made up with additional manufacturing margin generated on the sale of the high-end TVs (meaning a higher price).
If the guy is working full-time, that represents a cost of at least $100K which has to be made up with an extra $4K generated on the sale of 25 high-end Sony TVs from that one Best Buy (or and extra $2K generated on the sale of 50 high-end Sony TVs, or whatever. Maybe he gets a sales commission so the overhead is less, but you get the point.

Not much different than the Apple guy who frequents one of my BBs on the weekend.
There's clearly a difference in quality in some of the more well known brands. I've had seven or eight LCDs in the past few years and I can tell you, at least in my experience that the couple of Sony sets that I had looked noticeably better than the entry level models from other companies. This may not always be the case, but it certainly was when it came to my TVs. Don't get me wrong, even my entry level sets looked decent to good, but the couple of Sonys Which I spent a little more money on definitely had the edge in the picture quality dept.

Although, I don't have a source, I have read this a few times on these forums, but it was a year or two ago. Someone in one of the Vizio threads had his TV die, it was a couple months out of warranty, Maybe 14 or so months old and Vizio wouldn't repair it under warranty. So he asked if he could send it to a shop and pay for the repairs himself. He was told it was not possible as Vizio doesn't keep spare parts on hand. So not only would they not help him, he couldn't even choose to pay for a repair himself because there were no replacement parts. Basically, he had to junk his one year old TV. That's what always turned me off from Vizio. They usually get all of their TV components from the cheapest seller and make a certain model TV, which is how they keep their costs down.
The flip side is, no spare parts. I've seen several people in threads mention this and mention when their TV did happen to die under warranty, Vizio would replace it with a different model, not repair it. This was a couple years ago, though. Things may be different now. I've noticed this mentioned by a few different Vizio owners over the last couple of years.
