What are the views of the Seleco dlps vs their own crts.

I saw their crt awhile(800hd) back at the Chicago a/v show. I have not seen their dlp yet . I am building now and just relearning where I left off about two years ago. All I remember is that the picture on the crt was amazing and it was about $12,000 but with their dlp in the same price range. What are the advantages and disavantages.

Thanks.

Hi Larry,

The pluses and minuses of DLP vs CRT will apply pretty much to the Selecos as they do to other projectors.

For lots of debate, do a search for something like "digital versus CRT"

and do it on both the CRT and digital forum.

Basically, 9" CRT's are still the king of the hill in terms of resolution capability. There are no digital projectors you can buy right now that will display full 1080i resolution.

Most CRT's have better contrast than any currently available digital projectors. Higher contrast makes the picture look more three dimensional. While I have searched and searched for a good digital projector, I haven't found one that can compete in picture quality for even three times the price of my $1K Sony 1271q. This situation is changing rapidly, and within a few years (possibly even one year, with the HD2 chip) digital pj's will probably be truly competitive with CRT's in terms of picture quality.

DLP's have the eyestrain problem (for some people, not all) and all have motion artifacts.

On the other hand, DLP's are brighter - but if you have a completely dark room this really doesn't matter.

Of course DLP's require much less setup and are much smaller.

Ease of set-up and small size are the main reason most people buy digital projectors.

chrisreeves,

very well said, I second every sentence of what you say. However I would like to add that the SIM2/Seleco HT300 has yet the most 'analog' picture I have seen so far. There must have been a lot of tuning to make the overall look of this 16:9 DLP projector appear as if it was a CRT. I don't know how they have done it, but it worked ;) Especially shadow delineation and the reds are amazing.

Hi Larry,

I own a Seleco HT300. I looked far and wide and spent a liong time looking at mostly digital projectors.

The Seleco HT300 is currently the top of the heap for digital projectors, and if coupled with a screen like the FireHawk from Stewart it produces a stunning pictures that you need to see yourself to appreciate. It is not the cheapest, but it is the best and offers the most options.

No motion artifacts, no rainbow, and amazing blacks and contrast levels.

You really need to see a HT300 setup properly with a proper screen to appreciate it.

CRT is still fantastic, but the difficulty with set-up and the constant fiddling required offests for many the improvement in picture quality.

Have fun with the process,

Here I go, coming in on Cain's coat-tails yet again. But seriously, the HT300 is every bit as good as Cain and Christoph describe. I have owned the 300 since Christmas and have seen two 7" CRTs since. I'm sure these could have been improved through better screens, tweaking, ISF calibration, better scalers ect. However, in there current form they fell short of the performance of my HT300 in a number of important respects, particularly sharpness and clarity but also in terms of colour fidelity. The reds especially were not as well saturated on these units compared to the HT300. The only area where the CRT's out performed the HT300 was in reproducing pure black. However, I thought the shadow detail was at least comparable with the HT300 in all but the most dark scenes. Bare in mind I had little time with these pjs and was not able to use material I'm particularly familiar with. But still, I came away pleased with what the HT300 is capable of.

Man, I am struggling to keep my mouth shut... I have had the HT300 for about a week now and it is truly fantastic. The reason I'm trying to keep quiet is that I'm watching it on a $10 white sheet from Payless until my Firehawk comes. The blacks are not super, but what do you expect from a sheet? There, I'm glad a stayed quiet till my Firehawk comes and I'm entitled to an opinion. Whoops!
