I have used the AVS search to no end and have next to no answers from it except 1 user thought it was a great way to go. I have seen it being used with different computer cards. Please explain it for me, I am sorry if some people will get upset, if your upset stop right now and read something else. I don't want answers from upset or angry that I, a formum user with 1200 posts needs an explanation.

Most of my posts have been on the DVD software, DVD hardware or Direct view HDTV forums. I hope with 33,500+ AVS members someone will not be too upset, to answer my questions.

1. Should I get a DVI card for a planned HTPC?

2. Will my RCA F-38310 accept this digital visual interface?

Going back on words DVI, I got one fella who said "he seen the digital light" in using this, he does not want to go back to SDI analog DVD!

I have heard what you all have said in spending too much, therefore I have configured a CPU with 1.7GHz. P4 512 DDR SDRAM and a 80 GB Hard drive. Total cost before tax and shipping $1,357.00 it includes a CD/RW 40x/10x/40x with Roxio's Easy CD creator and a 16X DVD ROM Drive with software decoder. Graphics card is 64MB Geforce2 MX 4X AGP Graphics card with TV-Out. I have read that Larry Davis likes Radeon better, I think so also. It really comes down to the DVI graphic card.

Any changes will be appreciated by computer knowledgeable People, unlike myself or I wouldn't be asking these questions. I can bruise I am human none the less, and can be hurt by words said to me.

I being crippled will have someone else set it up for me. I can't afford in 'pain' a fall out of my wheelchair, would do to me! I have to prove to the apartment manager I can live independently, and I have done so for going on 3 full years. Thak You In Advance :)

I was going down the DVI road, but in the end it seemed fruitless. I ordered a NEC lt154 and an ISCO lens. They are in the mail and I haven't actually seen the combo, but I gave up on DVI. It seems to get little support from displays. I truly don't know why, it seems like a good idea. The selection of LCD projectors with it was pitiful and also there was the unresolved max. cable length question. 5 meters I think...

DVI is a great interconnect technology especially for digital displays. It avoids the extra analog to digital conversion and more importantly, the regeneration of the pixel clock that is not transmitted in a analog connection.

If your RCA F-38310 is not a pixelated digital display (LCD, DLP, PDP or LCOS) then it won't have much (if any) use to you.

To many, it is percieved as evil because of the impending copy protection mechanisims that is being pushed for all 'digital interfaces' not because of any technical performance reasons.

Most Radeons have either dual connectors (DVI and VGA) or a DVI-I connector that has both DVI and analog integrated in the same connector. The analog connection is then accessed via an adapter dongle. So you will likely get DVI 'for free' even if you don't (or can't) currently use it.

Dave you mentioned pixels I've been told to get the pixels multilply the 2 numbers or 1280 X 1080= 1,382,400 pixels with a .78 dot pitch. Updated configuration with DVI included, believe me I can afford it with one check from my checking account or My clean and green charge card. Price $1,837 plus tax and shipping if not free minus $150 Rebate mailed in. What do you think? I would be getting the Intel P4 Northwood version. 512 MB of RDRAM & 80GB hard drive at 7,200 R.P.M. I would be connecting this via a component adapter into InlineInc IN3504 with gold plated bnc to phono jacks, I have 2 DVD Mega Changers already operating pass thru PQ into Y-Pr-Pb component input! TIA :)

Point of clarification: SDI is digital component (i.e., Serial Digital Interface). It is very high quality.

Normally, DVI and SDI are used in different contexts. It often goes something like this:

DVD Player >--SDI--> HTPC >--DVI--> RPTV/FPTV

Good luck.

One thing to note: I have it on reasonably good authority that DVI only supports three specific HDTV formats: 480p; 720p; and 1080i. It is optimal to have a display whose native format is one of the above. The DVI vs. analog improvement will be more noticeable with pixelated displays, as Dave says. However, I'd expect the image to be slightly improved (more stable & accurate, less noisy), even with a CRT-based display. Just a scientific guess, though.

Dell is offering these at as choice in cards on their 8200 which one would go thru my component adapter and keep me happy for 3 years?

64MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX Graphics Card with TV-Out Â*

64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 Graphics Card with DVI [add $80]Â*

Advanced PerformanceÂ*New 128MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4â„¢ Ti 4600 Graphics Card w/DVI and TV-Out [add $310]

Dell is not offering any all in one radeon cards for some reason, they used to but not anymore. What is the reason why I can't access www.dell4me.com it 's comes on as a blank white screen.

I have received their offerings for the month of May, they have a new 2200 series but that's with lame inteleron system. They have a 16MB ATI RAGE Ultra Graphics but on 4400, not 8200

Would I be happy using the Ge Force 2 watching DVD movies on my F-38310 without the DVI. I thought the hard part was learning how to use the computer, will my 6 years online with webtv help me to learn my computer. I know most of the terms but not how they work like CD-ROM and the Hard Drive accessing it, adding or deleting things. :) TIA

If your primary usage is DVD rather than gaming, I'd dump the Nvidia and go with a ATI 7200 or 7500. If you want a TV tuner as well, you could consider the original Radeon AIW or seperate tuner / capture card with dscaler. The 8500 AIW still has unresolved gamma issues for HTPC use. Just one mans opinion :D

Dave since my *service menu* (thread on direct view forum) on F-38310 says I have 8,950 hours on the *odometer* thats what it said inside my F-38310 Service Menu! I watch from 1 to 2 movies every day 7 days a week for 17 years straight. I checked my DVDs service menu this afternoon and my Sony CX860 has 784 hours on DVD laser and 3 H on CD/VCD laser.

Man that elusive service menu took weeks to find the sequence, but it was a challenge. All the hours of a never ending 9AM to 1AM days 365-6 days a year on and on. CPU better know who the owner is because I am long on hours and patience. Better be built like a brick SH for when it meets me it's in for a workout!

I will take what you said into consideration and thank you. CYA :)

DVI that I am talking about is Digital Video Interface, I have no idea what you are talking about. I use the Y-Pr-Pb Component or S-video which are then line doubled.:)

You do not fully understand this acronymn. It is a type of connection that is not analog. It uses a different connector and is not YPbPr or Svideo or RGB or Composite or any other analog signal.

This should clear it up a little or alot. Good luck...

After you get this straight go back and reread everything. Your wires are crossed I think.

EDIT: here is a better picture of some computer connector types and their names.

What is this a blooming joke your google search produced this!

Your search - tbn:BChCXeGG5BAC: [URL='http://www.mkdata.dk/click/images/_780.jpg']www.mkdata.dk/click/images/_780.jpg - did not match any documents.

No pages were found containing "bchcxegg5bac".

Suggestions:

Make sure all words are spelled correctly.

Try different keywords.

Try more general keywords.

Try fewer keywords.

I clicked on your URL google.com said what is above, talking about crossed wires¿

Hi Hob:

___Please take a look at this article entitled Digital Visual Interface (DVI) Explained & Improving GeForce2/3 Image Quality as a primmer before you do anything else. I have already told you to scrap the DELL. In fact, call DELL up and ask them the questions you have asked in this thread. Than go ahead and call up Kei at Digital Connection and ask her the same. You will quickly find out what a POS you are about to purchase from DELL as well as who you should purchase your upcoming HTPC from.

___Good Luck
