set of speakers for $2000 - $2500

2069 Views 25 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  RonaldoCombs
hi guys,

im very new to the sound game, buying my first "non in a box" home theatre

Ive decided on the Marantz 6004, I now have to research speakers, I want 5.1 setup. I have a small space that is a lounge and not a dedicated av room. I dont want my speakers to take up space or clutter the room. my budget for 2 front, 2 back, 1 centre and 1 sub is about $2000 - $2500. Im not mad on tallboys cause of space, I would like 2 bookshelf in the front and 2 in the back ... any suggestions on the brands I should be looking at ?

Another thing .. I quite like the looks wall mounted front and centre speakers, do they offer as good sound as a set of bookshelves ?

I'll Spam my NHT Classic 3's that are for sale in the classified section.
You can get matching 3's or 2's for the rear if you want direct from NHT or ebay.

You have a good budget, take a look at SIERRA-1 for bookshelves. Read a lot of good reviews on them. You can build a 5.0 near your budget. You might have to get a cheaper subwoofer.

HSU Research and SVSound have package deals as well. Not as good as Sierra but cheaper but you'll have more money on a good subwoofer.

I have no idea about wall mounted speaker. Hopefully someone can give their input on that.
How big is your space?

What is your HT:music ratio?

What speakers have you listened to? What did you like or dislike?
Mains/Center/Surrounds:

Klipsch: RF82/RC62/RB81

Aperion: 5T/5C/5B

Monitor: RX6/RX Center/RX1

Axiom: M60/VP150/QS8

KEF: iQ70/iQ60c/iQ30

Paradigm: Monitor 9/CC290/Mini Monitor

Ascrend: Sierra 1's all around

Swan: Diva 4.2F/Diva 4.2C/Diva 4.2R

Energy: RC-50/CC-10 (or RC-LCR)/RC-10

B&W: 684/HTM62/686

Epik, SVS, and Elemental Designs are all very good for subs.

EDIT: my fault, missed the part about wanting bookshelves up front. That was copy/pasted from the last ~2500 5.1 suggestion thread. Either way, just duplicate the surround recommendations for the fronts.

Where are you located rjuch? I would suggest you drive around and take a look for yourself.
deleted my post.
Atlantic Technology System 2400
Klipsch XL-12 System
Lot's of choices out there. Much more that don't allow intrernet sales as well.
I third the suggestion about the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1s. They are really amazing speakers and are a very nice bookshelf size. I think you could just about squeeze in 5 of them and a SVS PB10-NSD within your budget... That setup would absolutely rock your space.
Alternatively, use Sierra's for L/R/C and the smaller HTM-200's for the rear and free up some budget for a Rythmik F12. Sierras are overkill for rear channel, imo, and the PB10-NSD is rather large physically for a small room.
thanks for the replies guys !

my space is "small" front wall to back wall is 3.6, so I will be roughly 3m from the tv. but its a penhouse style apartment with a double storey ceiling with a double storey floor to celing window front. So Its a very big open space, not sure if this affects my setup choice ? ie. no ceiling to bounce sound off, etc

whats HT:music ratio ?

Im in south africa, so ebay not easy for me ... wouldnt buy second hand stuff over ebay, would buy from a supplier on ebay if they ship here ...

Ive been told by a friend to look at Polk, Pvision, B&W or Jamo thoughts ?

Will bookshelves in front deliver good enough sound ?

what should I consider when looking at bookshelves ? My ideal would be to have tiny bose size speakers that I can hardly see ... but ive been told they dont deliver good sound like a bookshelf will ? whats the smallest bookshelf I can go for ?

will look at all your suggestions, thanks guys !

sorry, just to understand, you guys say SIERRA-1 for all 5 ? does that mean I put a bookshelf as my centrespeaker? and not get an actual centre ?
ok ive looked at what a set of B&W will cost 685,htm62,686 and a ASU608 ... If i want something similar but cheaper... what are the "more affordable options" and also do you get bookshelves smaller than 30cm in height ? or is 26 - 33cm the standard for a bookshelf?

How much music do you listen to relative to watching movie (home theatre)?

Being in SA will impact which items you can get for sure.

Does your $2500 include shipping? That will definitely make a difference.

Never heard of Pvision, the others are all quality brands. Have you been to stores near to you and listened to what's available? What did you like or dislike?

Bookshelves can make a fine system; they just require a sub for music and it was going to be there for HT anyways.

You were told correct - steer clear of Bose and get real speakers that produce all of the sound.

Small bookshelves can produce a lot of sound, but your cathedral ceilings could challenge some. I have KEF iQ3 for my front three and like them a lot, they have a 6 1/2 driver. I would definitely add KEF to your list.

Yes, you can have a bookshelf for a centre, as long as your space allows.

But the Sierra is actually different in that they have a version of the bookshelf with the waveguide turned 90 degrees so it is designed to go horizontally.

If using a standard (non Ascend) bookshelf it should ideally be vertical.

$2500 speaker cost ... but thats my UPPER limit, im in the process of buying furniture, appliances, ie. kitting my entire place out ... so budget for sound could come under pressure ...
I like the B&W option you guys gave me ... could I get something similar but cheaper ? or is the B&W combo price good as im gonna find ?

the list above Klipsch to B&W .. which are the cheaper out of the brands ?

im not music guru or home theatre guru ... im looking for a nice system I can watch tv, dvd's and music that will be clear, doesnt have to be a loud system ... I will probably watch normal tv the most, then movies and a bit of music ... im not the type of guy who will sit on the couch and listen to music ... If I play music on the system it will be for while im working or doing stuff around the house or maybe for a party ...

For music the polks were too bright for me.
A lot would depend on what brands are available to you.

And what dealers you have in your area.
