It seems there are several threads indicating the vast difference in reception quality of OTA set top boxes. LG4200A seems to be the favorite. What I can't find is a comparison to built in receivers. Seems like built-in is becoming the standard, on more and more plasmas. I'm thinking I'd rather spend the $$ on a good receiver if the built-ins are inferior, and try to purchase a monitor only.

Thanks to anyone with experience or opinion?

Edit: If it makes a difference, I'm contemplating either a 32" LCD, or a 37" EDTV plasma for the bedroom.

FWIW, my 42" ED Panasonic fed by a USDTV receiver looks great in my living room. PQ wise I have no complaints (the remote on the receiver can be a little flaky though.)

I guess what I'm getting around to is if the quality of the built-in receivers can match the quality of the set-top OTA receivers? I'm going to spend some money for some receiver anyway I look at it. My experience with computer networking tells me that separate devices are easier to troubleshoot and replace, rather than some all-in-one box (ie: plasma with built-in receiver)

That's true but some people swear by the convenience of the built-in tuner. But also consider the fact that if you ever want HD programming from satellite you'll need a STB anyway which will also do OTA.

I'd say if the built-in tuner isn't adding significantly to the price of the set then go for it, otherwise get a STB.

Vin-thanks for the advice. It's going to come down to $$ for me anyway. I do have Dish Network equip (not HD), but the subscription has lapsed while I get along w/o any TV right now. I had not really thought about HD satellite, and I definitely need to look at those choices as well. I'm pretty convinced that I will get local stations OTA rather than some satellite package for fear of signal quality isssues bundled into subscription costs.
