set top box with manual channel add?

254 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  jtbell
I just bought my Dad a Samsung SIR-T451 for Christmas. He really likes it. The only problem is that he lives in an area where there are two nearby cities that he rotates an outdoor antenna to view their TV stations. The Samsung receiver does not allow him to add channels to memory manually. He has to use the channel scan to add stations.

He gets about 5 stations from each city, and he doesn't want to have to use a scan to detect the stations in each city. He would be OK with just typing in the channel if possible, but that doesn't work with the Samsung.

Are there any other relatively cheap HDTV receivers available that can manually add channels?

The Radio Shack Accurion STB has manual add. They were sold off on clearance and are hard to find at Radio Shack. Usually some on eBay.

Enter channel number (the real frequency, not PSID) on remote. If it tunes and you wish to add to scan sequence, use "add" button on remote. There is also a "delete" button.

You can add channels manually on the SIR-T451. I've done it lots of times. The trick is that you have to enter the physical channel number, not the logical (or remapped) channel number, when you're trying to tune the station for the first time. If the receiver successfully locks onto the station, it picks up the logical channel number and you can use that number thereafter.

Example: Near me is a station that is known as "channel 25" because it has broadcast its analog signals for years on that channel. However, it broadcasts its digital signals on channel 8. It's in a different city from from most of my other stations, in a completely different direction. So when I want to rebuild my channel list from scratch, I first do an automated channel scan with the antenna pointed to the other city, which picks up those other stations. Then I swing the antenna around and key in channel 8. The receiver picks up the signal and extracts the logical channel number from it, and the on-screen display changes from "DTV 8-0" to "DTV 25-1 WOLO-DT". From that point on, I can tune that station by entering "25".
