Ok, first of all, I'm a dumbass when it comes to A/V, so if my terminology or descriptions are funny sounding, bear with me please...

My equipment:

Mitsubishi 55313 (55" ws w/ built in tuner)

Sony DAV-FC8 surround system (100x6 watt)

A truckload of high-end monster cables

Some $50 jacked up RCA antenna thing

Ok, I don't subscribe to any "HDTV" service first of all, all I have is analog cable with a digital descrambler. Is it possible for me to get anything close to HD with this set up? If not, I don't mind upgrading to HD service. After a few days of plugging cords in, I have finally determined how to get the sound fixed on the receiver, but the video sucks. The picture is all stretched when I'm watching TV. I've set the dvd player to display 16:9 so movies look great (and I even figured out the progressive output thing I think), but television still looks like ****.

My question is that I I can receive a decent signal with what I have, how do I establish that? The antenna comes with ****** instructions, so I'm left hanging with that. I just want a nice picture, what settings/configurations do I need to run through?

Thanks in advance.

You already have the equipment to get local HD via antenna with a couple of assumptions. First, you don't list your location so I'm assuming your locals are broadcasting in digital. Second, I'm assuming you are close enough to the broadcast towers to receive a good signal. The correct way to do this is check AntennaWeb to find the correct type and size antenna. Your RCA antenna may work but I don't know of many people here using them. Check the local HDTV section here to see what people in your city are using.

Upgrading to HD cable will get you some channels like ESPN HD which are available OTA. Your selection will depend on your cable company.

What mode are you watching in? I watch 4x3 programming in stretch except for sports. Then I use standard. 4x3 letterbox, use zoom. 16x9 DVD or HD then use standard.

Have you calibrated the TV with Avia or VE? Mitubishis look OK out of the box. There was a huge difference after I adjusted everthing.

If you do a little more reading around here, you will find the truth about Monster. They make really good cables but so do a lot of other companies. These other cables cost about 1/4 the price of Monster and provide the same quality.

Stations and Antenna Types

TV reception is determined by the size and type of antenna and the direction in which it is pointed. To determine the right antenna, use the color coded Antenna Type to select the channels that you wish to view. Antenna types are color coded according to the size and type of antenna needed for reception. The list is arranged in order of ease of reception, with the stations requiring the smallest multidirectional antenna at the top, to those requiring the largest directional antennas at the bottom.

Use the "Compass Orientation" listed below to point your antenna or rotor system for the channels you wish to receive. Please note that "Compass Orientation" is referenced to magnetic North.

It means there are a BUNCH of stations transmitting in High Definition in your area. This = free HDTV if you have the hardware to pick it up.

NO KIDDING!

That is certainly a lot of free HD. And he is one lucky person to be in a area with that many HD stations!!

Ok... so I'm a lucky guy. Now I need to be an educated, lucky guy =)

How do I make my equipment work?

The antenna I have is the: RCA ANT200

I'm not sure what cables run where on this... do I run my cable through the antenna?

You are in the Memphis area like me. Try the local HDTV section here. There is a Memphis thread but it will take a while to go all the pages. Where are you located (don't post your street)?

No. If you have Time Warned cable, you can get an HD box from them for a number of channels. I'm not familiar with the RCA antenna but it may not be the type you need.

I think this may be your problem. The 313 and 413 models don't have an ATSC tuner in them, just NTSC. You will need some type of STB (set top box) for HD.

Yes I am in Cordova...

Ok, so I paid $700 for this "built in tuner" that does what exactly?

The salesman said this wa sthe antenna I needed for this area, go figure.

Actually, I have model# WS-55513 (the gold series). Does this make a difference?
Yes it does. So you have a built in ATSC tuner and an antenna. You have all the parts that you need to get HD.

Quote:

The knowledge of the salesmen in this area varies considerably. I had a guy at Circuit City on Winchester say I couldn't pick up OTA HD with my DirecTV HD receiver. He had one on display that listed OTA HD as a feature but that wouldn't convince him. He lost my business.

Being in Cordova, you are right next to the towers so just about any antenna should would. Is the antenna omni-directional? Do you have any buildings, water towers, trees around you? You may be getting a strong signal with multi-path. The signal is bouncing around and you are receiving 3 or 4 "paths". With an analog signal, your picture would be ghosting. With digital, you don't get anything.

Go to Radio Shack and get their Double Bow Tie antenna (930-0998) for $15. I'm about $25 miles from the antenna farm and get a good signal. It should work great in your area.

This has nothing to do with Time Warner Cable. If you go that route, you will need one of their HD cable boxes.

You will need the Radio Shack antenna and part #15-1253 to convert the 300ohm antenna wire to a 75ohm F-connector. Connect the antenna wire to the converter and plug the converter into the digital antenna (female F-connector) input of your TV. Follow the directions in your TV's owners manual to scan for channels. I can't help you with the TV because I have the Mitsu without the built in tuner. I knew I was going to get my HD via DirecTV and OTA so I didn't need the extra expense of the built in tuner.

Not all of them. Stations whose call letters end in "-DT" are broadcasting digital and maybe HD. Other stations are just the regular old TV signal. Also some stations are almost 100 miles away. That would take a really big antenna to pick them up.
