My friend saw my ReplayTV and absolutly has to have one. I did the right thing and also told him about/showed him Tivo and he thought it sucked so Replay it is. At any rate, he also wants me to hook him up with DirecTV (I use Dish) because he really likes sports.


So my question, since Replay will be the "Brain" of his television system, he doesn't need a DirecTV receiver with fancy graphic or anything, which receiver will give him access to all the channels (except HDTV, of course)and preferably allow serial control via replay for perfect channel changes all the time?


Thanks for your input! Oh and please don't recommend DirecTiVo, as he has expressed a preference for the ReplayTV software!

It's great to have all this great gear. But I'd instead put all that money into software (Movies) I'd have SOMETHING TO WATCH ON ALL THIS GREAT GEAR. Doh!

You correct about picking a basic DirecTV receiver; that's the way to go when connecting it to a Replay. I think the RCA 420 model is RCA's basic. I'm not sure about Hughes or Sony.


If your friend gets a two-receiver package, dedicate the basic model to the Replay, and use a higher end model for dobly digital, UHF remote, etc, if those features are desired.


The Replay comes with everything needed to control a satellite receiver via serial cable.
