Settled on the parts for my soon to be ordered computer... I think

1340 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  hdtv00
I'm just trying to build a pretty good computer for the next 5 years hopefully, I don't know how long this stuff will last. Most of the stuff I kept the same, a few of the items I changed. Like the video card, because its a crossfire mobo (I know for crossfire get a better psu). Putting the items in order from most expensive to least. I'm going to buy heatsinks and fans or whatever but those cost cheap, so I didn't put it in this list.

Video Card - Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 - $256
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102713

MOBO - ASUS P5E WS Pro. Edition - $267
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131236

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - $225
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037

HDD - Wester Digital Cavier 160GB 16MB Cache - $130 (Getting 2)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136062

Memory - Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) - $129
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145176

CD/DVD Drive - Samsung CD/DVD Burner - $32
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151154

Case - Cooler Master CM 690 - X-Mas Gift
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119137

PSU - Ultra X2 550W - X-Mas Gift
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...350&CatId=1079

$1039.

If I tweak anything I'll post it in here, and not make another thread. Ehh. I thought a quality heatsink/fan was cheap. I'll need to decide on one, but the list is the basics.

Yea thats what I'm hoping. Isn't the HD 3870 X2 coming tomorrow?
Wasn't sure if you were looking for input, but here's my $.02

5 years is a looong time. Depending on advancements (like some new video card or cpu slot design), your system may or may not hold up that long. Hopefully PCIe and LGA775 will stick around for a while. We already know DDR2 is out the window.

Video cards are the least future-proof. The 8800 GTX/Ultra has been the best so far, but only to those who spent $500+ a year ago. The 8800 and the new ATI cards should hopefully hold out for 2-3 years at most - if you want to stay above the graphics curve that is.

Save your cash ($100) on the motherboard and go with a P35 chipset. The X38 doesn't have much for a performance improvement unless you go with DDR3 memory (BIG$$$) and overclock the crap out of it. The dual video card hasn't ever impressed me because by the time you get to purchasing the second card, it's the same price to just buy a new single card and get better performance.

Hard to say on the CPU, but seems like everything is going multi-core. That being said, I would suggest a quad core to be more future-proof. Nothing else much to say.

2x 160gb hard drives. Depending on what you are using it for, this may fill up quickly. No idea if it will last 5 years.

Great choice on the memory. With only 2 sticks you have extra slots to add more memory in the future, if they still sell DDR2 when you need more. DDR3 would have been the better future-proof choice but not financially.

A combo LG hi-def player would be the most future-proof instead of a plain dvd player/burner. They are a bit pricey right now (~$225-270) but it allows you to play hi-def discs without a standalone player.

Yea, I said 5 years because my brother built a custom build for my moms and dads house about 5 years ago. And its still very useful to my younger brothers and sisters for school work and stuff/old but fun games. Thats what I'm aiming for. Since I know when Starcraft 2 comes out (If it ever does) I won't be buying any other game for a while. And I know that Blizzard makes it so alot of computers can play their games. Thanks for the input though.

edit - And yea. I know I'll probably build a brand new computer at the most 2 years from now or something like that.
I tweaked the video card, because newegg took off the turbo card for some reason.
Dump the 3870 and get a 8800GTS (G92). Virtually as fast as a GTX. Very quiet and runs cooler. PS is suspect. A higher quality would be worthwhile. 2 gig Ram is enough.

MB is too expensive for rest of system. Do a little reading on some sites ie..anandtech, hardopc, etc......

for XP yes - for now. for Vista, no. the extra $20 for 4gb instead of 2gb is well worth it, especially in 2x2gb sticks instead of 2x1gb. any upgrades down the line will be limiting with 1gb sticks
You also need to start thinking about Vista 32bit versus 64 bit. If you are buying an OEM license you do not get a free upgrade from 32-->64, so it is best to decide now. Picking the right 64bit compliant components now and taking a chance on the 64 bit OS will most likely help in the future proofing. You will be able to get the whole 4GB now and make an easy jump to 8GB later (or now - I have heard some intriguing ideas about using 8GB of RAM to eliminate the page file).

Also, there is always something faster and better coming out soon. Buy it when you need it.

+1 ! I built last week but did not pay enough attention to this fact and bought 32 bit Vista. My system is 64 bit compatable, but with an oem Vista I will have to buy a whole new Vista 64 if I ever think the need or want to upgrade my memory to 8 GB.

Get THIS Card instead. Nuff said.

I couldn't be happier with mine and for the price you CANNOT go wrong.

Years you say, quad core, the evga $235 version vid card, no you don't need a better PSU. Ram 2 gigs is fine, you can upgrade that easy when ever you want down the road, same with vid card, the only two thing's that will need updated 2 years from now, and with a quad core cpu wise you'll be set for many years after that even.

You have it almost right at least. And I for the life of me , can't figure out why you wanted that ATI card....oh and WHY an almost $300 MB, that's just stupid waste of money. I just don't get it. You can get a nice one for quad core for $90, why the hell would you spend almost $300. You can even over clock the quad 6600 to 3ghz making it ultra fast with stock cooling. I mean seriously....come one now.
