Several Options, but which one?!

Hi guys,

Thanks in advance on this one, I am a newbie to Home theater. I've been reading up on here and on cnet for the past couple of weeks in search for an affordable Home theater system. My price range would be about $400-500, but truth be told, the cheaper the better. (For now) :)

Here's what I have:

15' x 12' living room

Xbox 360 (Used for Dvds also)

PS2

VCR

27'' RCA (Upgrading to 50" HD LCD relatively soon)

What I want in a system:

1. To be able to play Dvd's, Games, and Music (I'd like all around performance if possible)

2. I'd rather buy a better receiver and be able to upgrade the speakers later. I don't mind paying the extra $$ for HTIB speakers (as I'm starving for surround sound), I probably will upgrade later as I get more money.

3. Receiver must be compatible with HDTV (I'm not sure if it even matters?) as Xbox 360 is HD capable.

I'm currently looking at Onkyo's HT-S780 or HT-S770, are there any HTIB's that are on par performance and price wise with these two?

Or are there any receiver/speaker component combo's anyone can suggest for my price range? (Was considering the 780 receiver with Athena Micra 6's...but I think its slightly out of my price range)

I'm looking for the top 3 options I could do.

Thanks again and I aprreciate any feedback!

Do you think you might come into some money sometime in the next year? The only reason I ask is I made the mistake of buying a HTIB and soon after I wanted to upgrade. I sold it for half what I bought it for because none of the pieces in it were really worth keeping.

The good thing about the Onkyo is it comes with a decent receiver. The HTIB (including the Onkyo) subs are super boomy which sounds great at first but after a while you'll wish you had something that really shakes the chairs and rumbles your chest.

On the onther hand, for just a little more you could spend $250 on a decent receiver, $250 on a good entry level sub like the BIC Acoustech H-100 or JBL e250p. Then find some good entry level bookshelves from Amazon or ebay for another couple hundred like 3 pairs of Polk R 15's (jr.com) and use them for mains, center, and surrounds and you've got a 6.1 for under $800 shipped. Ok, more then just a little, but it's a system you can grow with and upgrade as you go along.

Think about it. The fact you're actually checking out a forum suggests to me you are an audiophile in the making :) I had to get real creative with finding money to pay for mine. Had to sell some stuff on ebay and asked for an early x-mas present! But in the end it was so worth it. I go home everyday looking forward to listening to my system.

I appreciate the feedback ElGuapo.

Your comment hit a curious nerve, it never occured to me that I may not be satisfied with the sub. One thing on my agenda is to possibly check out the Onkyo's in person somewhere, you guys know of which electronic stores carry Onkyo, I couldn't find them on Best Buy.

I WAS looking into going more expensive and getting components, but I do not know enough about what components I need or what works together as a system, hence the query.

Any other suggestions would be great!

Thanks again.

dig through some of the longer threads on this forum for good HTIB-alternative ideas (sort by # of replies at the top). some systems can be put together for about $500 that are definitely superior to a comparable HTIB.

and your suspicions on the sub are merited. ;)
I spent about $650 on my budget system with seperates. I am very happy that I made the choice that I did. Yammy receiver, Dayton and JBL Northridge speakers.
Thanks G-star and Golfrat for input.

G-star, I tried looking up "HTIB alternatives" to no avail, probably due to being a AVS search newbie. I'll keep searching.

Golfrat, What model Yamaha and speakers?

Where's a good place I could go (online or locally) to find these products?

Thanks for helping out!

I just put together a budget system and I'm so much happier with it than I was the Onkyo HTIB I purchased 5 months ago. If your going HTIB then I would suggest Oknyo or Yamaha as they include good receivers than you can grow with. The speakers and sub are lacking though. I didn't realize how much until I put together this system.

Pioneer VSX-516......199.00....free shipping

Athena AS-P400 SUB......149.00....free shipping

Athena Point5 5.1 Bookshelf Speaker System....199.00 + 33 Shp

Thier are other comparable components in this price range but not many. After extensive searching this is what I purchases and I'm very happy with it. I waited for free shipping specials on everything but the 5.1 speaker system and the final cost was 580.00. That's not including cables and speaker wire. I found parts express to be the most reasonable for cables, very good quality also and good shipping rates. Order all the cables in one shipment to save on shipping.

Thanks G-Star!

I happened to pass by some of those threads, but having them posted here was a big help.

After much careful deciding (more like dilema), I WILL be going with separate components.

I'm thinking of upgrading semi-slowly and when I say semi-slowly, in reality, will probably be a month or two span. (Electronic binger) =P

First off, my priority lies in a good receiver, sub, surround, center, and fronts in that order. Only because I have an old pair of fairly large floor speakers, I guess I could use as fronts until I upgrade.

Price range:

Reciever: Under $300

All speakers: Hopefully under $150 each component

Now I understand this opens up many more possibilities, so now how do I sort them all??

As far as 5.1 or 6.1 vs 7.1 receivers go, do I really need 7.1 say, in the next couple of years or is this something that manufactures do to make you buy bigger?

I was only considering 7.1 receivers in my comparisons, should I look for 5.1 and 6.1 more due to a lower budget?

I'd prefer to go pricier if the product will last me at least a few years with not too many drawbacks.

Oh I've been looking at Yamaha's HTR-5860, Onkyo TX-SR503, Pioneer VSX-816-K, any comments on any of these?

Athena's .5s are top on my list, anyone buy from Mytaxfree com? Reliable?

Dayton or Athena sub

Sorry for having so many questions scattered, I'm trying to get out work early. =P

Any help is always greatly appreciated!
