Share SVS subwoofer with AVR and Stereo Amp (Denon & Yamaha)

Hi! I've read quite a few things about how to connect my subwoofer to the avr AND the stereo amp, but I haven't found a definitive answer yet. I really thought this would be simple as in just using an y splitter at the sub LFE input.

AVR: Denon x3700h
Stereo Integrated: Yamaha A-S2100
Subwoofer: SVS SB-1000

Currently I only got the Yamaha connected by pre-out output to the subwoofers rca input. And I have the Denon in a separate setup.

I want to combine my 5.1.2 setup with my stereo 2.1 setup (to be utilizing the front speakers in home theater too) and want to be able to still use them separately by:

  • connecting the Denon pre-out output for fronts to the Yamahas main-in input
  • connecting the Denons sub LFE out to the LFE input on the subwoofer
  • connecting the Yamahas pre-out output (combined by y cable) to the remaining left channel rca input on the subwoofer (to be able to use the sub in 2.1 for music without the Denon)

Will this work? I don't want to damage anything.

A couple things of note:
  • the Yamaha would not output anything via pre-out when main-in is selected as input – which should be just what I want, when using the Denon for home theater so sub is fed by the Denon only and Yamaha takes care of the fronts
  • Yamaha says in the manual, I should connect subwoofers by pre-out output and not via high-level (see manual below)

So I guess this should work after all. Here's a reply from SVS customer support:

You can connect the subwoofer to two independent sources, using a single-ended RCA audio interconnect cable for each connection. The Denon would be connected the "LFE" input on the subwoofer, while the Yamaha integrated amplifier will be connected to the "Left" input.

If both sources are playing at the same time, you must be sure that they are playing the exact same content, else the subwoofer will try to reproduce both sets of content being sent to it via the two separate sources, which will result in less than ideal audio. With both the Denon and the Yamaha sending signal to the subwoofer, the unit will see an increased signal over a single-source connection, which will add about 3dB of output to the subwoofer.

There is no need to connect the Yamaha to the subwoofer via the high-level inputs, a standard single-ended RCA audio interconnect would be the ideal connection.
