Share tuner over lan from htpc to desktop?

1515 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  whiteboy714
I know this is a common question just wondering if there has been any changes on this front. I have 3 tuners in my htpc, sometimes I would like to use one on my second monitor while sitting at my desk. Even if I had to dedicate this tuner to my desktop thats fine.

Btw I'm talking about OTA here.

Is the hdhomerun my only option?

Hmmm I wonder if I could set it up on the htpc without it interfering with WMC, got the whole family used to WMC don't want to mess with that. I may have to have a look.
If you have enough antenna signal strength get yourself a couple of HD Homrun Dual Tuners. They work in WMC.. recording are local to the box unless you have some script to move them to a remote share such as WHS. But the tuners are network and dynamically assigned so each PC thinks they have the Tuners installed locally.
Yah I am aware of the hdhomerun I was more looking into doing something with my existing hardware.

Check out DVBLink for ATSC from 1geek1tool.com. combine that with DVBLogic's Server Network pack and it turns your tuners into network accessible tuners, letting you create a client/server architecture in WMC7. Im using their HD-PVR solution with the NWP and it works great and does exactly what you want.

It seems for the price of these two products I could probably snag a used hdhomerun

Not sure about MC7 options sorry, my vote is with Mediaportal too.

That and sage have more options for DVR related activities (OTA anyway).

Hope you find a way to do it without spending the extra cash!

Yah duh I forgot about media portal. I'll probably just do that when I have a little while to tinker. This is something I will only use now and then which is why I am not looking to spend any money.
Got MP set up, very easy, still have to mess with it a bit to get the guide working but I got tv going!! Thanks a lot!!
