I am almost ready to buy the Sharp 10000, but I need to consider a screen still.

My room is 15' x 15', and from 12'1" back the Sharp can produce a 92" diagaonal. Then I found out about the short throw lens, where about 10' back gives about 110". I figure I would be sitting about 12' back also, single row seating.

My question is if I went with the 100" or 106" screen, would I be more likely (or definately) suffer from the 'screendoor effect'?? I do not mind sitting the 1.5x distance (2x is too far for my taste)

The obvious answer would be that you should go look at one and determine it for your self, since some are bothered by this more than others.

However, in an attempt to answer your question, I have a Sharp 10k and have sat back 12' from a 98" projected image and not noticed anything like a screen door effect. I can look tonight and see how close I can get before I start seeing the pixelation.

The more important issue, however, may be dithering. Have you spent much time looking at DLPs to determine if you have issues with dithering? It usually manifests itself during camera pans when the whole image is moving. Because of the dithering I changed my plans for my HT.

I was planning on two rows with a 100" screen. I am now using a 92" diagonal screen, one row 15' back (about 2.25 screen width), and use some bias lighting. This setup limits the amount the dithering disrupts my viewing. I do not get headached but I was getting eye fatigue and found the dithering at times an annoyance.

I recommend you check out you susceptibility to the dithering before finalizing your plans.

I also PM'ed you because I just saw some new discounted pricing on the Sharp 10k that you might be interested in.

I have the Z10k on a 110" diagonal screen and using the short throw lens. I sit about 14ft back and can not see any SD whatsoever. I have never seen any SD on this pj. I love it to bits (apart from the fan noise).

Messiah,

I have noticed some of your comments about fan noise. Obviously, noise is a subjective issue (some say not noticeable while others say obtrusive). In quiet scenes I will sometimes catch myself looking overhead but for the most part I don't notice it.

Do you use high contrast mode or high brightness?

Do you have the power save setting on or off?

I recall some settings impact the noise level. I am going to go with a hushbox (WhisperFlow) anyways just because I would like it completely silent, if I can.

Yep, use Power save and High Contrast mode - quietest fan mode. Realise it's subjective but having owned and demo'd many pjs (LCD and DLP) over the past 12 months this is the noisiest I have heard.

Mweasured with ana ccurate sound meter 1m from the exhaust port it was 42dB. You cannot call that quiet.

with dlp, one has to remember to carefully adjust the brigthness and the sharpness on the pj. set the first a bit under 0, set the second often much under.

for the Z10000, I would recommend a scope screen, perhaps 3.5meters and 1.3-1.4 gain and an Isco or Panamorph. You would end up with 15FTL (remember, 3.5meter wide scope !) and for 1.85 material, about the same (14.8-15FTL). 500ansi in high contrast power saved on is used.

All with power save on, high contrast mode.

You would have about close to a real 2000:1 on off contrast.

Have you checked this against other 10k's ??? I only ask as some people complained about noise levels on early machines that were fixed under warrantee... Certainly it seems like many find it acceptable compared to other HD2's

Unfortunately mine was bought second hand but originally from PJ so no warranty in UK. Would be good to know what causes it as could then try something myself. It bugs the hell out of me when I think of it (i.e. quiete scenes in movies).

Just following up, seeing if anyone else has comments? Anyone with a Sharp 10k live in the Philly area that might be interested in showing me their HT?

Well I came to a decision.

My seating is 12ft (144in) back. If i put the projector behind me, I can get a 92" diagonal. That equates to a 1.56x distance back, which should suffice fine. I can always move my couch forward if I really need the bigger feeling, but also to get a bigger diagonal I do need an extra lens, which is not really cheap.

Thanks for replying everyone! AVS Forum has been extremely helpful!

Hi again, revisiting....

I realized (I don't know what took so long) that the 1.5x distance is compared to the WIDTH, not the DIAGONAL. So now I am thinking that sitting 12 or so feet back on a 92"diag (80" wide) screen would not give me the movie experience I want. I could get the wide-angle lens, but that would mean putting the pj in the middle of my room to project the image size I want -- is this really worth it, considering I would have to move the pj when I have company (get it out of the center)? Is setting up the image on a screen a big deal that isn't worth doing more than once? I can't ceiling mount, btw.
